"We're getting better," Illinois coach John Groce said. "Our minds and hearts were in the right place today. You've got to throw a couple in.
"We're diagnosing this or that. We had some good looks today. We executed really well for the first 30 minutes. We didn't make enough of them."
With 37.1-percent shooting and 15 turnovers, the Illini didn't have the firepower to stay with the Wolverines, who share the Big Ten lead with Indiana.
