"It's always a great day when you've extended your football season," Thomas said. "I think it's critically important (to play in a bowl)."

In a big-picture scope, Thomas said the program needs to show improvement in attendance and consistency.

"I'd rather not be 4-6 and (have to) win the last two games," he said. "It's better to be the ones being chased than the chaser."
