Possible CBI invite?

UI should never participate in a tournament like the CBI. Ever. It should be considered far beneath our program. Even with the program struggling the last 3 years, set standards and expectations high. NIT is bad enough. CBI is the NIT's little brother. Avoid it at all costs.

Just a thought: the problem with Thorne's medical redshirt is that he played one game in the "second half" of the season, right?

That Indiana game was game #19 of the season. Today is game #33. The CBI is a 16 team tournament with a best-of-three final, meaning a team can play as many as 6 games.

If we can make it to the finals of the CBI, game #19 isn't the second half of the season anymore.

Brilliant!

Do we really want to add more games to this injury bug season???? I for one do not want us to take anymore chance for someone to get hurt. All that being said if we win our next 4 games I could get over that really quick.

I actually think the best thing for this team is to do well in the BIG Tourney (already done) and let the season be over. Use the momentum for the next season. No interest in the non NCAA Tourney brackets, and don't think it helps as team that will be different next year anyway.

If it's left up to the players, I believe they will play. After the season we've had, and the way we played the last couple games, every true competitor will want to keep playing just to prove (in as many games as possible) that we finally figured it out and matured and are on a roll into next season.

I doubt Illinois would accept a bid. A couple nice wins.. take that momentum into next season. A loss to Dartmouth or Central Michigan is not what the program needs and it puts a major damper on any positive vibes going into next season.

That being said, there is a new post-season tournament in Vegas this year called The Vegas 16. That one might be more appealing... If its filled with other high majors, I could see Illinois accepting, if invited.

Agree. End on a high note. I'd be surprised if the CBI is the statement JW wants to make.

Still a no-brainer, as far as i'm concerned. Accept without hesitation.

Is it where we want to be? absolutely not. But in order to get where we all want to go, we have to take any opportunity to get better. More games and practices are always better.

Well said. UI should be the type of program that looks down on the CBI because we have higher standards and expectations. Beat PU or at least give them a good game and we end the season on an upbeat note with today's win. Then get healthy and expand our games in the off-season and gear up for an NCAA tournament season next year that hopefully is the first of a string of Dance cards the next several seasons.

No thank you. This is our tournament. SFC renovationa would mean we'd have to pay to travel to the likes of a Robert Morris. Not to mention with the way the season is going don't want to risk injury that could hold us back next year. Ride the wave of momentum from B1G Tournament into next year.

So by beating IA yesterday, game today + 5 CBI games would be enough so we don't need to tank the 2nd game of the CBI finals to make sure we get to play all 3 final games to get to 38? Boy that was close!

I say we try to get there by running the table in the BTT + 3 in the NCAA.

We could also play in this new Vegas 16 thing which is a four-day, 16 team single elimination bracket, and if we make the finals of that, that would be enough too since we won yesterday.

Win today and we'd only need to make the semifinals of either.

For the record there is also the CollegeInsider.com tournament, but that only allows teams above .500, which we can't get to without winning the BTT and thus making the NCAA's.

Your post got me curious. Vegas 16 sounds kind of great (as far as any tournaments that are not the NCAA tourney can be). Would love to take a long weekend to Vegas, stay at the Mandalay Bay, and catch a ton of basketball, including 4 days of Illini.

Unfortunately, looks like they're not very interested in teams with losing records. If we make a run though, maybe that would be an option.

Livengood said there is interest from many teams that have won 20 games, but that 20 wins aren’t required. He said the Vegas 16 probably would not pursue teams with losing records, though.

I have to wonder whether they are gonna pull top bubble teams away from the NIT. the only downsides to this vs. NIT would be that at NIT you get home games and some revenue. aside from that, this seems like a much cooler event.

Easy, we just turn down the invite for NCAA, we're now playing for Thorne & the medical redshirt...just need to find 5 more games after today. Something to play for. ;)

Seriously though, this would be the strangest outcome ever if that really worked.

I think that was a joke, playing more games doesn't change Thorne's case.

Think I would slip into a coma if someone got hurt in a game where Illinois was in the CBI.

A little off topic (and believe me I'm not holding my breath for this) but what sead do you all think we would get in the dance if we won the BTT?
