2016 Coaching Carousel

Norm Roberts was 81-101 at St. Johns. He should not be in the top 100 candidates for us. Also, the boosters aren't the ones who care what skin color the coach has.

Jeff Capel was 96-70 at Oklahoma. That's a worse record than Groce has at Illinois, a similar caliber program. Again, should not be considered.

Kenny Johnson is way too inexperienced for a job like Illinois. He was coaching AAU 16s just 5 years ago. Let him prove himself elsewhere.

Hubert Davis only has 4 years as an assistant under his belt. Again, should not be in consideration.

Kenny Payne is actually a good coaching prospect, but we'd still probably have to be turned down by about 10-15 guys to get there.

Agree with this, none of those guys are realistic options.

Isn't Marshall Koch-brother financed? Not sure we would win in a bidding war, unless he wants to move up to a higher caliber conference. He's already making $3.3 million/ year...

I didn't realize that Marshall was so unapproachable. That is pretty astonishing money for the MVC. Heck, its excellent for the B1G

Been hearing Jamie Dixon as a potential candidate at TCU. Even though he played there, wouldn't it be a lateral move at best going from Pitt to there?

It's a step down but if TCU wants to throw big money at their mess, I could see it. It's not football where step downs are that rare. In the last few years we've seen coaches go from Missouri to Tulsa, Kansas State to South Carolina, Marquette to VA Tech, etc etc. Now this doesn't involve scandal or fighting with an AD I'm sure, but it wouldn't be too surprising. TCU is still Big 12.

They need a coach who can recruit Illinois. Every year the top talent leaves the state and it's been going on for years.

Year Top 10 in Illinois
2005 0
2006 1
2007 3
2008 1
2009 2
2010 3 only year they get the top guy
2011 4 players 6,7,8,9
2012 0 only 4 in the top 250
2013 3
2014 0
2015 2
2016 0

I agree, although Kenny Payne and Jeff Capel will be the first from this group to get head coaching jobs. But I doubt it would be Illinois. Hubert Davis and Kenny Johnson will also become head coaches in the future but will start at a lower level.

Norm Roberts will likely end his career as an assistant with Self. He has two totally failed stints as head coach, so another head coaching job, especially at a HM is not in the cards. Given his age and his salary at KU, I doubt he even pursues low major jobs.

After the Nunn incident, would not shock me that the new AD is quietly seeking a change.

Marshall would be a great get.

It would take a truckload of cash to get Marshall, and that might not be enough. He already makes $3.3M at WSU.

Man, I like Yale's James Jones. Maybe a flash in the pan, but he seems like he's really good. You don't luck in to a comeback against a team coached by coach K.

Wonder what he could do with more talent at a lower academic requirement institution. No necessarily Illinois, but like a good mid-major or even an Oklahoma State

I'm convinced Coach K has paid shills that go and promote his assistants or former assistants on every teams forums that may have a vacancy.

1 NCAA birth in 16 years would be a tough sell. If prefer Amaker to him if you dipped into the Ivy League, but I'd avoid it all together. Different beast.

Agree. Don't think I'd support the hire at Illinois. But he could make a heckuva HC at a good mid-major. I like Amaker, too. Think he likes where he is, maybe?
