What is the point of BTN overflow channels if they aren't utilized for basketball?

Not sure what prompted this, but it has been discussed many times. They only exist during football season. And the economics just aren't there to make it worthwhile for non-conference hoops games.

They should let the local channels take over then for those particular games. The local Channel 3 station used to be able to fit it in economically. It doesn't make since that the BTN can't with the huge money they are making.

If the local channels could broadcast and make the feed available through BTN, that would be a win-win. But given that BTN is really Fox, there are probably station contacts/conflicts that prohibit that.

I think that happens in Iowa, I seem to recall reading on their board that the local cable providers show those games. I'm sure that the BTN would be willing to sell the rights if Channel 3 wanted to purchase them. But that gets back to the economics that I mentioned....

Do not be desperate and bring him back too soon. That would be a disaster.

It's not desperation, it's just the nature of the injury. It wasn't that serious. Not surprised at all that he's well ahead of schedule.

Supinie: Second chance for Illini forward Leron Black

“My situation could have gone all types of different ways,’’ Black said. “I’m blessed to be back on the court. I’ve learned from what happened. You live and learn from what happened. It motivates me every day. Every morning I wake up, I thank God I’m still here and have a chance to play. Before, I went hard. Now, I’ll try to go even harder.’’

Maybe this was Black’s come-to-Jesus moment, a turning point in his life where he switches from a player who couldn’t control his emotions with a string of technical fouls as a freshman to the ugly arrest one year later. Through probation and community service, Black found something positive, he said.

I didn't care for tenor of that article as it relates to 'should Leron Black be here?' Sure it says many nice things about LB but aren't we way past asking that question anymore? Whether you thought he deserved another chance or not was a relevant question at the time that decision was made. In my opinion LB has shown, without a doubt, that keeping him was the right move. I just don't see the point in trying to reopen the debate.

Still too early to make such statement IMO. Black has not even served his suspension yet. Actions speak louder than words, and the real test will be the est of time. Leron has been given a second chance and he has to prove with his actions and behavior for the rest of his career (and beyond) that he learned from this and made something positive out of this opportunity.

Voluntarily putting in 175 hours of community service instead of the required 25 falls in the category of "action speaking louder than words" if you ask me. I see your point, but in terms of the "test of time", at this point in time Leron has gone above and beyond to make amends. Not saying the verdict is completely out on Leron but up until now I think most would agree he's proved worthy of the 2nd chance.

Nobody is saying that Leron is not on the right tract, but that "at this point in time" is just too early.

Well, this is where those inarguable words of mine come into play, "In my opinion." At this point in time, it has proven to be the right decision. No one, at this point in time, can argue with any validity that it was the wrong decision. Can that change? It certainly can. But I have had my faith restored in LB. Serving the suspension is neither here nor there, it is what it is. What's he going to do? Refuse to serve the suspension?

Having the host school's student media cover the games via the BTN although channels would work. Not the best play by play and analysis but passable.

It has nothing to do with serving the suspension, the suspension will be served, and Black has no choice. The point is that it is very early to declare that "LB has shown, without a doubt, that keeping him was the right move." So early at this point in time, that he has not even served the suspension. Timing issue, not the suspension itself.

Suspension is just a penalty, but completing the suspension is not an indication that LB has proved it was the right move. That verdict will be reached in due time, looking at the rest of his UI career and beyond, and we all hope that Leron learned from this experience and proves himself (and the school) right with his actions moving forward.

I think the suggestion is to have Channel 3 or other local channel cover the game, their crew, equipment, etc. They used to do that anyway. Then provide the feed to BTN overflow channels. The game is blacked-out locally so the local channel gets the benefit of viewership/advertising, while BTN gets the benefit of viewership outside the local radius. ESPN still does that, as do other cable channels.

Win-win, but there needs to be a financial agreement, plus there may be other contract/conflicts between Fox/BTN and local subsidiaries of national channels.

A select few of Iowas games get broadcast on Mediacom. Mediacom is about the only cable provider for the entire state outside of satellite options. It has its own channel as well. I assume as a cable provider that carries the BTN this was part of a deal. Mediacom also has naming right to the court iowa plays on.
