Earlier in this thread Calipari was mentioned as an elite recruiter and good coach, yes he is an elite recruiter, but as a coach he changed his style of play. I read an interview he gave either just prior to or early as Kentucky's coach. He went to watch Junior College coaches style of play, then ask them about how did they dealt with the 1-2 year total turnover of players. He was tailoring his coaching style, recruiting to mirror JC basketball. I don't like him or Kentucky, but my point, know who you are, who fits your style or change to fit them and where you are. College basketball is evolving, tailor your style to it or loose every recruiting battle and then loose every game. OR be an elite coach and good recruiter. OR just cheat for 3 or 4 years and move on to the next school.

This seems to support the argument of Cal being a good/smart coach, no?

Coach Spoonaur at EIU, before Coach Cuonzo Martin. Spoonaur has a JC National Championship at Wabash Valley. It was a fun team to watch.

There must be some ISU fans here. Tell me more about Dan Muller.

Hard to get a good read on him. There are some very mixed feelings around Bloomington/Normal. I think much of that is related to some early decisions regarding who he played and roster turnover.

He has had a considerable amount of turnover during his time here and I don't know if it is because of his coaching style or just the way things seem to be trending. In any case, he keeps losing guys like Reggie Lynch and Nick Ziesloft. He is also very demanding.

He seems to like small lineups, considerable amount of guard play, his teams seem pretty scrappy (like he was) and he is a pretty smart and confident guy. They have played really good defense this year. I think they are fun to watch.

I wont comment on the coaching at Illinois. Cant say something nice then don't say anything. These guys with their high school turnovers are killing this team. Cant blame Coach on those but these guys sure seem to struggle when pressured out top. I just think these guys are a middle of the pack team at best with a coach that is....... Ill stop there.

Way too early list:

They will almost certainly say no but you have to ask:

Billy Donovan
Brad Stevens

Plan B back up the truck and give them what they want:

Gregg Marshall
Archie Miller

Stevens & Donovan would not leave the NBA for Illinois. An awful lot of people on this board didn't want Stevens when Weber was let go. Of course, he wasn't interested in coming here anyway.

It was not one week, it was actually a 1.5 months. Furthermore, it did not prohibit Whitman to make a change and look for football coach even on a shorter timeframe.

I thought Whitman had plenty of reasons to fire Groce last season, disaster of a season (despite injuries) and myriad of off-court problems.

As far as this season, not sure of the argument that people make that "squeeze into the tournament" and all is peaches and cream, Groce receives a multi-year guarantee contract, recruiting foodgates open, etc. I find little difference in those elements even with Groce squeezing into the tournament. As said many times, I am also not sure as others that if we squeeze out of the tournament (and and up at NIT) the outcome may be significant different. I am not claiming that if Groce indeed makes the NIT, he will or will not get fired, he may very well get fired, but I still have doubts that is a such a done deal as others make it out to be.

I agree, with Groce's incoming recruiting class, probably a decent run in the NIT saves his job for another year.
I think there is plenty to go on that he is not a good coach. That said, I'm not sure Illinois is considered that good of job anymore.

No doubt the chances are very slim. I call their agent anyway. A firm no won't kill you.

All of this hurts. How about having Lovie take a little time off recruiting players and go out and talk to some BBall coaches.

It's a plenty good job and the right guy will jump at it.

"A decent run in the NIT" = oxymoron.

Winning the NIT is exactly as rewarding as getting blown out in the first round. Do. Not. Care.

Is our coaching search becoming a State Farm commercial?

* Pan to Whitman on the phone *

IL Posters: Who are you talking to??

JW: A coaching prospect from the MVC

IL Posters: Oh yeah, what are you wearing, coaching prospect from MVC??

Coaching prospect: Uhh... khakis

* Pan back to IL posters shooting glares at JW *

:D

You have to have humor when your are begging for last four in invite that isn't coming:thumb:

I do not recall a line of guys wanting the head job for the Illini being very long after Weber was let go. We were turned down by a few though.
I'd personally look again at Butler. They've barely missed a beat since Stevens left. But frankly, over a lot of years now, rheir program has outperformed ours.
