Huh? This article defends Drew as a good coach, and claims that he is accused of being dirty without proof. I'm not sure how this article supports your position.

So why does everyone hate Scott Drew? Because he’s dirty, opposing coaches would say. Because he can’t coach, fans would say.

But there’s really no evidence to say he’s anything other than a good basketball coach.

...

It seems like a lot of coaches wish they could come up with something, but so far they haven’t, as CBS Sports’ anonymous poll found that “almost nobody has a specific story (of wrongdoing) but nearly everybody believes ‘he’s gotta be doing something.’”

...

That’s some strong evidence that Drew does know what he’s doing. But it shouldn’t take advanced stats or fancy shot charts to prove Drew’s coaching acumen by now. The guy who took over a mess of a program and brought it to new heights is, in fact, a good basketball coach. Imagine that.

Until you find something substantive to use against him, it’s time to give him the credit he deserves.

One only needs to look at Rick Barnes' tenure at Texas to get an idea of how relatively low the expectations are relative to resources.

My understanding is that the resources were put into the massive revenue-generating football team and not as much towards the basketball team, but I'd have to see numbers.

Archie may not have any interest in our opening now, but he will have plenty of reasons to be interested once Josh gets into a room with him. We just have to hope that he can sell the job as well as we all think he can when he gets that opportunity, which I am confident he will, if for no other reason than Archie is fishing for leverage.

That being said, here are some reasons he will be interested:
1. $$$
2. Jamal Walker is a friend of his, and already has recruits lined up
3. $$$
4. Talent on the current roster
5. $$$
6. A great situation with regards to conference, facilities, AD, and national recognition
7. $$$

After that, if he doesn't take the job, I'd be just fine with any of the following:
Bryce Drew
Kevin Keats
Cuonzo Martin
Buzz Williams

...in no particular order. They all have pros and cons in my eyes

What if I brought up the name Dan Majerle from Grand Canyon?

You wouldn't be the first.
Majerle is one that confuses me. He was a Suns assistant for like 5 years and up for the Suns head coach job and when he was passed over for Lindsey Hunter. Then he took the job at newly Division 1 GCU? It all felt odd to me. It was like he just walked away from the NBA suddenly and unexplained. No other NBA opportunities? No assistant job at a larger school? It felt like a really small and out of the way opportunity for a guy with a known name, plenty of contacts, NBA playing and coaching experience and at a time when he was so close to an NBA head coaching job.

Job is posted. Posting closes a week from today. So there will be no hire until then, not that there was much of a chance of that anyway.

Anyone else planning to apply? Apart from having no relevant experience, my resume is pretty good: experience in sales and marketing, management of large staffs and budgets, founded a modestly successful startup, UIUC alum. Fat for next head coach? FFG.

Jerry Colangelo is a major financial benefactor of GCU.

The plan was to spend a ton of money for a big, splashy entrance into D1 basketball.

It has gone....okayish.

No thanks on Thunder Dan.

I suppose that article could be used to support either side of the Scott Drew debate. The view I'm coming from is that I don't want a coach that is widely assumed to be dirty, even if it hasn't been proven. Same reason I don't want Buzz.

I guess my position is that I don't want to sign a big name from another P5 program at all costs. I'd rather hire an up-and-coming coach (like Keatts) than a big-money P5 guy with a less-than-stellar reputation.

If we are truly willing to go up into the $4 million range then he will certainly listen. Dayton is not a place where you stay - it's a stepping stone. But a stepping stone to what? Obviously, NC State will make a big play for him, but Illinois is a MUCH better job than NC State... which is arguably the 4th best coaching gig in North Carolina. IMHO Illinois would be a perfect spot for him. The only thing I could see standing in the way is if he gets word that there will be an opening at OSU next year

Gregg Doyel once wrote a good article on this situation too but it seems to have disappeared from the interwebs.

Condoning threats to deport recruits is not cool. Though I suppose that whole deportation thing is really no big deal these days. :tsk::hurl:

Ah yes- my internet searching leads to speculation that his GCU salary is 1.5 million!? I suppose that would be a reason to give it a go there.

The posting requirement was waived in his case.

Maybe it would have been waived for Monty too, who knows. But with a proper search in place, there is no need for the waiver here.

Yes, and Whitman actually explicitly said in his press conference that the football situation was totally different circumstances and this will be a more "traditional" search.

I would assume Archie Miller knows this is false, considering the Chicago recruiting success he's already had at Dayton.

The players that Archie has recruited from Chicago to Dayton weren't really of the caliber that would command foul play, so I doubt he really has the first hand experience navigating the recruitment of top talent from the city.

However, between where his brother is coaching and his previous stints as an assistant, I'm sure he's got a decent idea of how recruiting goes at this level.

This is one of the great myths of recruiting.

The level of circus around a kid only very loosely correlates with how good he is, at least among D1 caliber recruits.

Jeff Goodman from ESPN was just on Chicago Radio. Said that the thing that hurts the perception of Illinois in the coaching world is that it is thought that you have to get "dirty" to recruit in Chicago right now.

I think he's a national guy that is just repeating a consistent narrative that makes it sound like he knows what he's talking about. I don't know what it is about Goodman - he seems to have decent opinions and info but I can't stand watching him. He seems so pleased with himself all the time. How's that for baseless and vague criticism?

Josh Cunningham was a Top 100 recruit. Somehow ended up at Bradley first.

The view I'm coming from is that I don't want a coach that is widely assumed to be dirty,

So according to the Illinois message board community, we'd have to eliminate every coach that has ever beat Illinois for a recruit.
