Yep. Only school that has a shot with Billy is Indiana

And strangely, Indiana is not speaking.
At some point pretty soon, it seems that they either have to say something positive or let Crean go. Just one more interesting side stage in this carnival of rides.

Yeah I could see a school like Indiana waiting around with Crean and doing what Whitman did with Cubit if Donovan gives even a hint of wanting to go back to college.

I wouldn't believe anything you read......

until Friday night at the very earliest......more likely Monday or later. I think anything out there before then will be garbage. Fasten your seat belts....I'm sure more rumors to come 1st.

Certainly nothing can be made official until Monday at the earliest, so that's something to be kept in mind.

Since the need for a great recruiter is obvious, especially since Zo-Noz, and since most assistants handle the bulk of the recruiting, which coach we are after has the best potential recruiting assistants. I don't know much about these staffs and was curious if anyone knows who might have Midwest ties that would benefit us. I mean, I know Miller has recruited Chicago but what about Bennett/Marshall

Bennett landed the top recruit out of Indiana last year. Lawrence Central HS.

I heard he said Illinois hire will make a splash and be a surprise. Anyone see this and know who he may be referring?

Whether Cuonzo succeeds long term at Mizzou as far as record could be debated, but him recruiting close to Illinois will have an impact. It definitely increases recruiting competition, no doubt about that. If recruiting was not very high on some posters' priorities, fine. But history proves that we need a significant upgrade to become consistently competitive in B1G and national level.

I have always claimed that to be successful at Illinois, consistently, we need a great recruiter. It is an absolutely necessary condition, though not sufficient. The hiring of Cuonzo at Mizzou turns up the dial a few notches as far as need to counter with a very dynamic recruiter, unless of course someone believes that his hiring will have no effect, or that recruiting is not all that important.

It'll certainly have an impact. Their approach doesn't concern me as much as a program that's led behind Jim Phillips does - not entirely sure why, it just feels cheap.

Hiring a coach like Bennett, Miller, Drew and ponying up a sizeable sum of cash might be the recruiting tool we've lacked for... ever? People notice that. What may not be evident to a recruit, or average fan, is the guy who puts us in the position to make that happen - Whitman. Leadership is critical.

Cuonzo, the guy who has gone from Tennessee to Cal to Miz in a 7 year span, is not the answer. In fact, his lack of commitment will probably keep him on the outside looking in as far as ever reaching the B1G - which I'm guessing is/was his goal?

Cuonzo to MO is what they needed. Lots of racial unrest on campus, an AA coach helps from a PR standpoint to help heal that rift. Mizzou AD Jim Sterk made it happen by making an offer nobody else was going to match. I think he'll do well there for 3-4 yrs. Then we'll see. He could keep it rolling or fall back to the middle of the SEC pack.

Good news. My boy @ESPN1050_Ryan reporting Illini recruit Mark Smith to Illinois is nearly a done deal. .

If this were true (not saying it is) wouldn't that mean that Smith knows who the coach will be and that the decision has been made on that front?

That would be great news. One, we get Mark Smith. Two, I don't think Mark Smith would commit without knowing the coach. Three, I don't think Mark Smith would commit immediately on the spot if the coach wasn't a homerun. Now that's entirely speculation.

Sorry, but I don't watch this that closely... but do coaches active in the tourney announce that they're taking jobs elsewhere? I can't think of a situation like that - a head coach of a team in the dance who has announced already that he's gone next year. Don't they do that after they exit the tourney?

Unless this "deal" was done weeks ago(if there actually is a deal)?

That's more speculation of course.

And he most likely would commit knowing the rest of the class is staying as well right?

I am guessing that this is not true, simply because the whole thing has been VERY quiet and I cannot imagine what you can tell five 18 year olds that then stays a secret. jmo

Coaches coach through the tourney for sure. As I mentioned before, basketball is different from football where a coach will depart in the middle of the bowl season.

Then don't we NOT WANT news. I.e. - if we want Keatts, Marshall, or Bennett, we sort of need to hear nothing. Hopefully for a few weeks! (they go deep, and our deal appreciates over the course of the tournament)

Ryan Evan just said that Smith was ready to commit to Groce and that's he's Illini all the way and just waiting to see who the new coach is and get to know them.

It's all speculation but you've got the wrong speculation.

I read an article of smith saying he really liked coach Groce but would give the new coach a chance. He also said he has talked to all the other recruits after the Groce firing and how all would like to still go to ILL right now together. Smith goes to my high school. When I was a senior he was a freshman. I have friends that know him. Right now I believe he does want to go too ILL

Just a speculation tho so take it for what it's worth
