A Monty hire is a solid "outside the box" kind of move. Nice to feel like we don't have to compete with the other schools pursuing coaches if we go in this direction.

Two extremely difficult circumstances that probably also cause some to consider his ability to commit to a major head coaching job.

The idea that the NBA would be a better lifestyle for his family doesn't seem as obvious to me as others have said.

A college job is probably more total hours of work, but you're on the road a LOT less. And at Illinois a lot of your recruiting is day trips. JFWIW. I'm not really buying this Monty stuff either way.

I saw one interview with Monty and the reporter asked what was one of his weaknesses and he said "he was brutally honest," if that's a weakness??

Groce wasn't a team USA assistant. And even though Groce is unemployed, the San Antonio Spurs front office isn't beating down his door right now. Some advice, don't compare Groce and Monty because there is absolutely no comparison. I think having concerns about Monty is fine, there would be valid concerns there. He might not be the savior of our program, but Jesus is now being mentioned for the Indiana job anyway.

I get that. Monty's in a different league (literally). Not positively comparing Groce to Williams, just pointing out that if people thought Groce was a good coach upon hire, they were proven wrong. I think more effort needs to go into watching game film of the teams they have coached... for all candidates. I personally don't think Turner did near enough vetting of how Groce coached the game. He went by enthusiasm and the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for Ohio.

I say this with an unblemished record of staunch heterosexuality....but Monty Williams looks in great shape in these Youtube clips for a guy around 45 years.

Trying to keep up with this coaching search and trying to figure out Whitman's moves like:

Forgive me if someone has addressed this[I missed about 1.5 days and 75 pages of this thread], but is Fred Hoiberg still a possible candidate or is there some solid reason he wouldn't be considered or consider the job?

He has 15 million reasons to make the Bulls fire him before he considers another job. And he won't be fired, because the Bulls are a clown car.

I hate to be this guy but I have to. Where is all the Monty stuff coming from?

The whole month of January.

Exactly. Thank you.

His first game ... I remember being incredibly enthusiastic. Then the game started. Dribbling without purpose, poor passing, no movement, bad shots. Defense didn't help correctly and couldn't recover. The proverbial "huh?" went up in a balloon above my head. I commented on it on this site actually. I thought OK it's early but it never got better ... for five years.

I liked it better when we hired a new coach in 2 days, like we did with lovie.

Please be a real insider. That list is

And if we don't bother with the humiliating nonsense with coaches we can't get, that would show tremendous command of the process by Whitman.

Coaches we can't get? I'll add that to the bucket list:

Bears will never win the Super Bowl. (Done, 1985).
Bulls win never be good. (6 titles. Old Schoolers will remember that people used to say Chicago will never be a good basketball town. Bulls sell out string goes on forever).
Blackhawks will never win as long as Wirtz owns the team. (Several recent Cups, and team is still in the Wirtz family).
White Sox will never win the World Series again (Done, 2005).
Cubs will never win the World series again (Done, 2016).
Illini will never get an elite coach...
Illini will never be a true Blue Blood...
Still waiting for good reasons why the last two things won't happen like the rest of the list already has.

I will say. Those tweets on the Illini plane and the plane going back to San Antonio, and the plane going to ATL last week where the Spurs were playing, has me believing we might get Monty
