Not gonna lie, I thought the Lovie hire was desperate when it was reported as well. If the team improves and he continues to recruit as he did this past cycle, I will gladly shut it.

You call it desperate, but Mike Wilbon, a NW grad who HATES UI, called it "genius." I guess we'll see.

I still think JW has his plan in place for BBall, regardless of if it's choice 1,2, or 3. I just trust that his 3rd choice will be better than Thomas's.

That would be great. Another insider, taking the plunge.

I'll be ok with Monty. Not really who I wanted considering he has no experience coaching in college and his teams in New Orleans looked like crap. But, what the heck....I'll give him a chance. recruiting should be better with a guy who is a coach on Team USA

#3,954
Not trying to be that guy, but last time I had some knowledge it was questioned (understandably).

I tell you: John Groce has been fired. 30 minutes later, John Groce "officially" fired.

Anyways...

Monday, Monty Williams will be named the next head coach of the Illini.

I was outspoken and against you last time. This time, I'M A BELIEVER!!! If you're wrong, you'll owe me an apology Tuesday morning. lol

Why do people willfully not understand the context behind this claim and how stupid it is?

But that's like, up to the minute. I had been operating on the assumption that Tuesday was the earliest.

I've been involved with hires that are announced via email literally 15 minutes to a couple hours after EOB (end of business) both in public and private sectors

Yeah they were God awful. They made the playoffs barely by beating the Spurs (who were the defending champs) and had 1 nba all-star so they should have at least made the conference finals. Who cares that they were bounced by Golden State who won it all and went 73-9 the following season. And they fired him after that to stop the awfulness.

Disagree. Halftime of a home game would be amazing if they can pull it off. I'm not going to get my hopes up based on "insiders" though.

Whitman would never do this bc its not fair to the players nor the coaches coaching the game. It takes the spotlight from the players and puts it on himself. Not his style.

I didn't say they didn't improve, but he got fired for a reason. Also, I was more talking about his offense. I just didn't like the way they ran an offense. I think it will fit well with some of the players we have though

If this is true, it's a great hire. I understand the concerns about him never being an NCAA coach and having to recruit, but I would think he could put together a dynamite staff to assist with that. Before people bash him and ask why, look up his resume and know that he is well respected in the coaching community and players love playing for him. His record in NO does not take into account some of the trades made during his tenure there. He was heavily involved in molding Anthony Davis into the player he is today

Guyz, let's be honest with ourselves! Our pathetic program won't be able to attract anybodyz worthwhile. Cuonzo and Keattz dissed us and now they're going to win NCAA championships for Missouri and NC State while we languish in the hot tar of self-loathing and eternal mediocrity. Bennett, Marshall, and Archie wouldn't even deign to take a phone call from Whitmanz, unless it was to receive a desperate Illinois offer that they could leverage in negotiations with other suitors. They probably text each other and laugh about it! "Ill-annoy offered me $5 million, but no way Jose am I going to that foul smelling basketball purgatory! LOLZROFLMFAO!" We'll end up with another John F. Groce in all likelihood and spend the next two decades gazing up I-57 enviously at perennial tournament team Northwestern University. Or if we hire Bryce Drew or Monty Williamz they'll probably fail miserably (do those dorks even know how to coach basketball?? Monty missed the NBA playoffs).

Sorry, couldn't resist the opportunity for satire. Some of you guys need to see a professional about your kicked puppy complex. We're going to hire someone awesome and then win a bunch of games, make a bunch of tournaments, and maybe win a national title. Everything is fine. Goodnight!

Mea Culpa

I stand corrected, Im the on who used "desperate" to describe to the Lovie hiring. Another poster mentioned outside the box, that is much better phrasing. I apologize.

My train of thought was the program was desperate for positivity and JW had to go outside the box in regards to the footbal job. I'm hoping we aren't at that point with hoops.

I just want to win and enjoy March again. If the powers that be deem it Monty to take us back there so be it. Sigh

how do you like their offense under offensive guru 30-52 alvin gentry? Let's not act like we understand the Xs and Os more than we do. Coaches get fired in the pros all the time so the GM doesn't look like they're the issue. It buys them more clock on the GM job. Look at the Bulls. Thibs wasn't the issue. In college, there is more responsibility on the coach to assemble the team properly therefore they have less of a leash than an AD would.

Rick Pitino and John Calipari looked awful in the NBA.

bingo. Rick had one decent year with the knicks before he knew it would only get tougher and escaped for uk during his first nba stint. cal was all around turrible.

Look, if you're that ignorant about what Monty was able to do with the roster given in NO and his national reputation among bball elite, just say that instead of using 200 words to beat around the bush.

Your list is pretty much has been talked about since Groce left. Google Monty, do some reading get back to me. I'm impressed.
