This is the smug attitude that is part of the disconnect you idiots on this board have with why these athletes fill a disconnect with certain institutions particularly the chicago recruits.

Uh, I'm in favor of straight-up paying these guys and of them making the decision that is in the best interests of themselves and their families. Even my comment to you was that in most cases, the best thing to do for a big decision (picking college, deciding whether or not to take a job, etc.) is to ultimately do what is best for YOU.

You're the one on the high horse scolding HS kids about keeping their word.

It clearly says you're signing to the university....not the coach. It's been a matter of courtesy to grant releases in those situations. My gripe is the slow play, then re-affirm, the backout. This is on the adults for allowing this culture to permeate.

I ironically received a boatload of money to go to washu as a student and the thing that kept me going to U of I was not only did I already give my word, but I knew other people made decisions (roommates) upon my decision. I treated my decision as an adult.

"... Kids don’t know anything about anything We’ve changed as adults. We demand less of kids. We expect less of kids. We make their lives easier instead of preparing them for what life is truly about. We’re the ones that have changed. To blame kids is a cop-out.” - frank martin

Slow play? It's been 2 WEEKS. The kid is making the most important decision of his life so far. I think we can give him 2 weeks to think about it. Yes, he probably made a mistake in retweeting his commitment two days ago. But he's a kid and that's how kids learn. Put yourself in Tilmon's shoes. He has people telling him to go to Mizzou in one ear and others telling him to go to Illinois in the other ear. This isn't a simple decision for him.

Slow playing would be waiting until June to decommit. Then we wouldn't be able to get any transfers to replace him and we would truly be screwed. 2 weeks is nothing.

Furthermore, it is not that coaches/adults (including Underwood) keep their word either, they sign contracts, give their word, etc. and when a better opportunity arises, the often pursue it.

Man I was just hoping an explosive scoring wing JuCO transfer would ask for his release and end up at illinois. Isn't that something.

Go on... :)

None of this is Tilmon's fault from what I have seen and heard he is a nice young man. The coach who basically recruited him for 3 years and who he wanted to play for is no longer at Illinois. For him wanting out of his letter and looking elsewhere is a normal process. Lets be truthful here the schools treat the kids way worse than most players ever treat the schools. Offering and than pulling scholarships, running players they no longer want out of the program are common occurrences. While I would love Tilmon to come and am disappointed that he asked out of his letter I understand why he chose to do so.

Crazy enough, I don't feel awful. If there is no Tilmon or Smith, I'm still super excited to see BUs system in action. Still over the moon about BU and now Antigua.

That said, Kiir would really, really help right now. Him plus another Antigua big and I'm feeling good.

Then why reaffirm your commitment in person and then retweet your commitment? Only to walk back on it?

I think we have every right to criticize that, kid or not.

I don't blame Tilmon for requesting to get out of his contract, but this is a poor comparison. Underwood's contract allowed him an exit by paying OSU $3 million, which UI will reimburse.

Right. And I still expect us to be involved with kids we wouldn't normally expect to be involved with. Not sure how this addresses my observation.

I disagree with your observation if it's implying we're suddenly going to start having a reall shot at the Karl Anthony Townes of basketball. That's not realistic with where we're at as a program right now. Groce already had us in the door with the players a notch below that level I.e the Brunsons, Wilkes, Braggs, Alexanders Tilmons, and Evans of the world. Antigua just needs to do what Groce couldn't and close on those kind of players.

Did we just witness the prologue to the fight for Tilmon?

Certainly hope the good guys :)illinois:) win in the end.

Yeah, hopefully the Illini are Arwen and Cuonzo & Co. are the Nazgul. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I feel confident in saying we should expect to be heard with guys we normally wouldn't expect to be involved with. Maybe we don't get 'em, but we should have some pretty good recruiting battles ahead.

Didn't we already have that with Groce? We were being mentioned and involved with multiple 5-stars, which we hadn't seen in a long time. At the end of the day, of course, being mentioned isn't nearly enough.

Groce was a top recruiter as an assistant at OSU, but didn't surprise anyone with his recruits to Ohio, and at the end of the day didn't sign many big names at Illinois. Antigua was a top recruiter at Kentucky, but also didn't surprise anyone with recruits to USF. I am hopeful that Antigua brings even a taste of Kentucky-style recruits to Illinois, but I'm waiting for signatures to get TOO excited. (And no, I don't mean to say you're too excited, Uber...)

Nice, the one thing this board is excellent at is waiting. :thumb:

Interesting find, possibly no relevance, found interesting though....same school as Kiir?

Logan Windeler, Mac Irvin, Victory Rock Prepsame as Kiir, Obvious Illinois ties....hmmmmm

Smith, Kiir, Windeler?

Interesting - I just saw Windeler play 2 weeks ago. He was impressive to see in person, I heard someone in the crowd say he was just coming off injury. When he was on my the court he was definitely who I was drawn to paying attention to, and I had no idea of his name or who he was until after the fact. He was playing for the same club my son plays for (my son is only 8th grade), so we watched his game in between games. They have another tournament in 2 weeks, I'll try to watch him closer.

Retweet

Tilmons retweet struck me odd the moment I read it. I've never tweeted, but is it possible to "pocket tweet" an earlier tweet? It was the exact tweet he sent out with his original commit, wasn't it? That seems strange to me. I'm calling it an accidental tweet. What's the record for most use of the word tweet in one paragraph? I've got to be close.

I say don't let your happiness hinge on the whims of some dopey 17 year old kid, and face it most these bball recruits are immature. Let's see who decided to enroll come September and cheer for them. To hell with the rest.

It is just bizarre, that he tweets 2 days before he is committed, and then 2 days later he wants out, something had to happen.
