Formerly committed to Cal before Cuonzo left. Supposed to be a sweet pure shooter, nice fit as a complementary piece in Kentucky's offense.

Does this affect Smith? Baker is a 2 for sure.

A Kentucky writer just went up with a Mark Smith crystal ball pick for Michigan State, so I suppose that sounds like an answer to your question.

Have to think this takes them out of the hunt for Mark Smith.https://twitter.com/EvanDaniels/status/851839235011346432

If KY is out, that leaves MSU, OSU and KSU as our remaining competition. The Kool-Aid tells me Bruce Weber is not going to win a recruiting battle with us. Cross out KSU. Right now, OSU does not have anything to offer that we do not. A long time fan of Illinois won't leave Illinois for an equal or lesser offer. Cross off OSU.

That leaves MSU, which has all kinds of advantages over us. However, Smith left there without signing and left there saying he wanted to use his last official. That says we are far from out of this one.

So, the official Kool-Aid report is:
MSU - 60%
ILL - 30%
Field - 10%

I had assumed the point, but perhaps not.

I think if/when he plays pro ball he's a 1 but in terms of roster fit with the other pieces at UIUC or UK he'd play a 2 (who's very capable with the ball in his hands.) If he is really good at the PG, maybe a Dee/Deron shared duties situation. UK has Quade Green coming in (5* PG).

On the other hand, he'd probably fit best at the 1 at MSU, which is probably part of their sell. So I guess you're probably right that he will end up playing PG :) :(

It's linked on the front page here. It's Mike Carpenter and Steve Breitwieser, offshoot of the Tay and J Show.

It's frustrating because if Piper and Werner did a podcast that was actually informative it could be a really good listen (of course they'd also charge $ for it I'm sure). Those guys bring a lot of prospective that would be helpful in a podcast format. As opposed to the Tay and J Show which is more basic stuff for the masses, and the 200 Level which is just two guys rambling and contradicting themselves for an hour. (Sorry guys, I realize you probably read these boards, but it's true).

I for one like the show a lot, Carp is just like any Illini fan and tends to let his feels out on the show, might be why you think they are uniformed. But as they are friends with Piper and Werner I would tend to think they know more then the avg fan knows about what might be going on behind closed doors. It is like most sports shows you either like it or you don't though so can understand your point of view about it

I just wanted to say how much fans and supporters of Fighting Illini Basketball appreciate Trent Fraiser and Demonte Williams honoring their NLI with the Illini. These young men have made the correct choice on many levels and understand what giving their word on something means. Both of these young men have the respect and support of Illini fans now, and into the future. They will be successful on and off the court throughout their lives.

What a joke. Someone needs to humble this guy.

I'm fine not kissing the rings of any coaches. Win and it won't matter.

Keep acting inferior and we will stay inferior

What position do you think Smith is most likely to play in college? Yes, I think this means Smith isn't going to UK.

MSU has Winston solidly entrenched as a PG and Foster Loyer (018) PG on the way. MSU also has Langford and McQuaid at the SG. Not sure what position Smith would play at MSU.

I'm surprised no one caught this in the comment section of that article?!?!

Darth

I think the active rumors that Finke, Coleman-Lands, Jordan, and Williams were all set to transfer if Groce stayed is what made Whitman decide to let Groce go. The recruiting win of the 2017 class would’ve been “marginalized” with the loss of upperclassmen.

Anyone have some insight? Darth, are you on here??

Our lack of success was due to a failed coach hire (John Groce)

Per 247, he had a no. 14 ranked recruiting class in 2013 and a no. 16 ranked class in 2015, but he could not make a tourney with them.

He did have higher ranked classes, but that was largely due to class size.

Defnitely not Darth. I think that was more projecting from part of the fanbase that were so against Groce they thought all our players were too, plus our recruits would be overjoyed with his firing. Also saw at least one person on here who thought that firing Groce was the best possible development in the Smith recruitment. I'm sure others thought the same thing.

Forget rankings, he didn't bring in a capable PG prospect until his last year.

Anyone have thoughts on Taylor Bruniga? 6'9" forward who was a PG but grew 6 inches. Can handle the ball and shoot, and this sounds like a BU type player?

I see enough talent to make the tourney, but not much beyond that. There are some nice players but not enough to challenge for conference or national titles.
