Losing JCL would be a huge blow to this team. Anyone who doesn't think so needs to wake up. He is expected to be possibly our best returning player this year.

Lol, you could "possibly" say this about all the top 6 returning players.:illinois:

Who's expecting him to be? I was disappointed in his defense and ball handling skills, he was ghost in many games, (nit game ) so maybe he could improve, but you have to work at it. Not sure his heart was in it, and little mention of him in interview s lately seems BU hadn't seen anything worth mentioning. He wants to stay, work hard, and be productive, I'm all for it. I just don't see it happening.;) Anyone can shoot.

Aaron Jordan has a great opportunity to step up and I think he's going to open some eyes this year.

Jordan needs to become the athlete that he looked to be in high school, I never actually have thought he was a great shooter, maybe scorer, but in high school if you are gifted to that level, then you will score on anyone. College is different, I think BU system could benefit him though...we will see.

So where did the speculation come that JCL might transfer? That would be hard to understand with the amount of playing time that is available to him the next two years. I find it hard to imagine that he will find a school that is better than Illinois and offers as much possible playing time as we do.

The JCL transfer rumors have been bandied about premium sites for a couple of weeks.

Don't understand the defensive criticism, seemed to me he was as good as anyone except TJL. Also believe you can teach ball handling a lot easier than shooting. I think he would be a huge loss.

Disagree here. JCL showed improvements over the course of the year, but he really has trouble defending on the perimeter.

best shooter maybe, best player I would give to TJL. If the kid improves at all in his scoring he will be the best passer , ball handler , best D so yeah I would give him the best player title

I would argue that Kipper was a much better defender as well

And who other than TJL did not? TA only lacked a cape.

We were not a good defensive team but c'mon. JCL routinely got beat off the dribble and I can't count on two hands how many times he desperately leapt into shooters after being slow to rotate over. TJL, Kipper, Malcolm, Leron, hell even Finke and AJ showed better flashes of defense than JCL.

It would suck to lose JCL. I'm not positive whether he's still our starter at the end of the season, but at the very least he would be starting at the beginning of the season and a key depth piece, one of the first off the bench.

That said, I think Underwood's personality as a coach is about as different as you could imagine from Groce's, and it's not going to mesh with everyone. Indeed, I was just listening to a podcast with Bob Huggins the other day, someone asked if he or Martin was the "bad cop" at K-State, and he said "if you think we're tough, you should see Brad Underwood". We need some of that toughness -- Groce never seemed to get the best out of his players after his first year -- but Underwood's style might not suit everyone. I'm not shocked that this is a possibility. Hopefully JCL stays but if not, good luck to him.

I agree JCL was one of our better defenders. Other than Lucas & AJ, he & Kipper would be next in line as far as on the ball defenders. His loss would be a significant blow.

Update on Agau (non-paywalled article):
http://www.scout.com/college/illinois/story/1779883-nearing-decision-akoy-agau-sees-fit-smu
Illinois was the first of the four visits.
“They’re in the Big Ten, and that’s one of the toughest conferences out there. Plus they only have two frontcourt guys,” Agau said of Illinois. “It’s tough to win basketball games, let alone in the Big Ten, with two big guys. So the opportunity for me to play is there. It’ll be coach (Brad) Underwood’s first year. He was at Oklahoma State last year and was able to turn that program around within a year.”
Sounds like SMU is strong competition though. Decision expected by end of next week.

Kipper was a lockdown defender. I would not put him and JCL in the same category

Tate just said LSU probably the favorite.

If that's the case, we're going to need Gene Hackman as our Head Coach.

Severely undersized with a short bench. Hopefully we have Jimmy Chitwood as one of the walk-ons.

Jimmy Chitwood "JCL stays I play, JCL goes I go"

Really think you and I were watching two different JCL, Kipper was always after the ball, up on defense, and blocked out for rebounds. The comparison between JCL and Kipper is not close. Hope JCL can improve on that and ball handling, it will make better player wherever he is at.

Man, this isn't how I pictured things going down when Underwood was hired and the new coaching staff was put together. JCL leaving would be a HUGE blow. The kid can flat out shoot.

Missouri pulling in 5-star kids left and right with their new coach. Heck, even DePaul gets a 5-star kid with their new assistants and we can't keep the kids we have on our roster with our new coach and assistants.

The star recruit we did get (Mark Smith) was thanks to an assistant we already had.

Obviously, I need some good news, and soon. If it's indeed JCL who's leaving, that puts Illinois in a VERY bad spot for next year.....sure hope Underwood can do more with less, as good coaches seem to be able to do.

All the negativity is a strong sign that you've been in Iowa way to long dude, it wears on you, lol.

I have not caught up yet, but in case no one has asked, can you link the podcast?
