Am I literally the only one here who thinks this is not going to affect us in the slightest? Where was Underwood mentioned in these briefings? The heavy scrutiny is going to lie with these asst coaches and where they are currently. We're good

According to the NCAA, head college coaches are supposedly held responsible for the actions of their assistants

I'm kind of with you. You have to work your way through a pretty long list before you can even start to make any case re: Illinois.

This story started out sounding like the indictments were for assistant coaches taking bribes to steer college players to particular agents when they turned pro. It might be difficult to implicate a head coach for that, given that the team reaps no direct benefit from having a player leave the team for the pros.

Were any of these indictments for paying players to attend these schools? Note, I am NOT asking if asking HS players or their families ever get paid to go to a particular school. I am asking if any of these indictments involve specific allegations of specific players going to specific schools for cash payments.

I ask this question because institutional control, or lack thereof, is much more directly implicated in the second scenario than in the first.

The Bowen UL situations fits this. His recruitment, (like others i'm inferring this), seems the most visible part of these indictments.

You might want to check out the Rovell tweet somebody posted just a bit ago.

Assuming he's completely innocent, it still reflects negatively on Underwood's judgment bringing this guy in to take advantage of kids he was supposed to be protecting.

Not sure how you can work that closely with someone for that many years and not have some sense of it?

My Jimmy Collins PTSD is kicking in. I believe some schools exist just to serve as a buffer for others. The NCAA can proclaim it's doing something if it banhammers Illinois, while simultaneously ignoring what goes on at the blue bloods.

On a related note, Bruce Weber just found out that there is probably some shady recruiting that has been taking place in college basketball...

I am trying to understand how this fits in. If a last minute $100K payment tugged Bowen to Loo-ville, then why were none of their coaches indicted? Did any of the four indicted coaches do anything like this?

Pistols Firing on Evans: Link

I didn't read everything, but it seems like all the charges against Evans relate to kickbacks from sports agents, etc. vs. recruiting violations. If that's the case, the only problem here for Underwood would be a stain on his judgement for hiring Evans. It seems pretty straightforward to think that an assistant would hide these types of kickbacks from everybody and that that coach would be "clean."

Again,

This is not an NCAA investigation. This is the FBI, federal charges and the Southern District of New York. This is a huge bombshell.

I find it tough to believe the NCAA won't get involved in this.

Don't they sort of have to? If you ignore an FBI investigation and indictments of coaches with these sort of allegations, why exist?

I remember an Illinois assistant basketball coach telling me over a drink decades ago "Strange things seem to happen when recruits visit Louisville"

By any chance was that shortly after Billy Thompson's recruitment and his selection of Louisville? That was when I first heard that exact same thing and it certainly qualifies as "decades ago." :)

Well assuming he's completely innocent, he wouldn't have known so how can that reflect on his judgment?
Assuming he didn't know it was going on, the only way BU gets some punishment is under the NCAA rules that hold head coaches responsible for assistants.

Under the "Always punish Illinois if possible" rule.

Summary of Jay Bilas' opinion: if the benefit went to the school (e.g., getting a recruit) then the NCAA might go after the school. If no benefit went to the school (e.g., assistant pockets a kickback) then the NCAA is not likely to go after the school.

That's what every agent and coach I've spoken to is wondering.

Huge question: Will there be deals cut to keep people out of jail? And where will those fingers point?

Settle down.

I really hope that this is not the case, he appears very competent.

Maybe the language I used was strong, and I dont think the legal process is going to find a way to punish BU, but I do think it's possible UIUC is put in a position to void BU's contract at some point. The NCAA is such an erratic organization that seems to figure out punishments by spinning a wheel or throwing a dart. These things dont just flare and sizzle out in a few weeks. I should say I probably spoke too drastically stating its more than a real possibility, but I do feel like this is an outcome that tends to have a higher probability at UIUC than it does at other universities. Probably extremely early to be making claims on what is the most likely outcome.

Man, when these birdies start singing......the fallout could be ridiculous!

Just watch, the Chicago media will have this connected to BU in an instant.

#124
Well, if it helps, it only has Evans on the picture for bribes to steer to agents and not giving kids money.

Fortunately the Illinois AD is an experienced attorney. There will be no railroad here for a change.
