Coaching Carousel

Pitt hired Jeff Capel from Duke. What's the over under on years until Pitt is under NCAA investigation?

Better over under is how many until he's fired for not winning... Never understood the love for Capel. He sure can change, but he's showed zero skill at HCing.

On a reddit thread today I was wondering...anyone think Jerrance Howard is our next coach after BU finishes up his time here? Obvious speculation but I feel like we should really try to get him back at some point.

Was gonna post that passing up Capel for Scheyer would make zero sense and it appears Pitt agrees.

Solid hire IMO.

People in Pittsburgh are excited - a surprising display of competence from the athletic department. They would have gone psycho if Weber had been hired.

Nope. Don't see him ever being a high-major head coach.

You’ve stumbled on a recurring IL motif. No indication Jerrance will ever be coach here and probably needs some legit experience as a HC somewhere. But who knows.

Mack to Louisville per Twitter.

It's not that the NCAA doesn't or won't punish big-time programs, it's that they can't. Louisville has a huge loyal fanbase, a decorated history, gobs of money, and elite facilities. Give them the death penalty, do whatever you like to them, they will come back.

SMU died because they were a house of cards to begin with. Bruce Pearl's Auburn will be a house of cards too. Things built on a solid foundation cannot be stopped by temporary sanctions.

(And they shouldn't be, by the way. To the extent the NCAA ought to enforce its ridiculous mandate at all, the enforcement should fall on the coaches who commit the acts, not the future leadership who had nothing to do with it, or the real moral calculation in the college sports internet world, the fans who experienced "undeserved" happiness and now ought to pay penance)

Yeah, if he shows success at his first HC gig outside of Kansas, with his recruiting acumen and ties to Chicago/Illinois, I'd say look out. Big if though

I don't have very much info, but my personal view is "no thank you". Heard many times that his style was counter productive to BW's. An assistant that doesn't understand his role is not likely to be a good leader. jmo

Now that Mack’s gone I’m very curious to see who Xavier Hires. Doesn’t it always feel like they always hire a very good coach as a successor?

I feel like that was just more of a contrast between him and Bruce not being a good fit and having different styles. Seems like he and Self are on the same page and KU is better for it. I don't know, just my 2 cents on a tangential thought!

Gillen, Prosser, Matta, Miller and Mack have made a pretty impressive 33 year run for them.

We'd have hired Norm Roberts. How did that go for St. John's?

Haha, depends if you think the AD only hired those guys because they were asst's or because he genuinely thought they were good coaches. Either way he made the right choices seems like, more than I can say for Guenther or Mike Thomas

Didn't Guenther hire Lon Kruger and Bill Self?

I mean after Self left. I really think Self (and Lon before that) leaving made Guenther timid in hiring great coaches who might leave because of their success. Not to mention keeping coaches a bit too long due to their "loyalty" (i.e. Bruce and Zook)

Which caused him to hire coaches who would never have enough success to leave on their own. Guenther left a legacy of suspect hires, mismanagment of the DIA, and creating a country club environment for the inner circle of boosters. The worst part of him leaving was that we got Mike Thomas.

Yeah, I think Kruger and Self leaving left him gun shy. But Weber had experience taking SIU to the Sweet 16 and recruited decently for that level. I'm sure he saw him as a Lou Henson steady and solid type.

He had some decent hires during his tenure. Some not so great.

Ron Turner - eh... good play caller, lousy team leader. When he had team leaders like Kittner etc. they did okay.

Ron Zook - eh - good recruiter, not so good play caller. Held onto him too long.

Kruger - good hire

Self - great hire

Weber - gunshy hire.

Theresa Grentz - WBB - most successfule WBB coach we've had.

Jolette Law - Not so much

Don Hardin and Kevin Hambly - Volleyball - both great coaches

Brad Dancer - Men's tennis - great hire.

Mike Small - Men's Golf - great hire.

Dan Hartleib - Baseball - Solid hire.

Renee Sloane - Women's Golf - program is getting better.

Justin Spring - Men's Gymnastics - Solid program.

Janet Rayfield - Soccer - started out strong. Program hasn't done well the last few years. Is that due to lack of facilities or bad recruiting? Probably some of both.

Sue Novitsky - Women's Swimming - Don't hear too much about that program.

Jim Heffernen - Wrestling - Solid program, but has seemed to slip since Mark Johnson left. Who I also think was a Ron Guenther hire.

Overall, I think Guenther had a good run of hiring coaches at Illinois. Football was his weakest link, I would guess.

They should make Matta tell them no before heading anywhere else. Steele isn't their guy.
