Nope, Romo was after me. I was there during the days of Sean Payton and John Jurkovic.

The NFL player who I ran track with was Ray McElroy, 4th round pick for the Colts who played in the NFL for 6 years as a defensive back. He was a pretty good hurdler and sprinter.

Ha. My high school brought him in for an assembly when I was like a junior. Don’t think it went over too well.

Illinois perspective: No shame in losing a recruit to Alabama
Player perspective: Not sure this is a great move for him. They signed three TE's in 2018. Hoping he got assurances that he'll be their only TE recruit in 2019.

Eh, that happens at all the major programs. His long-time favorite prior to Alabama was Penn State, and they signed 2 4* TEs in the 2018 class. That's the expectation at a program like that.

PSU got a commit from a 5* running back in the 2019 class a few weeks ago. Committed to them over VA Tech, Ohio State, and others. And yet, PSU has a 2018 5* RB, a 2016 5* RB, a 4* transfer from Notre Dame, etc. He would have started at VA Tech from day 1, but he'll likely ride the pine behind two other 5* kids at Penn State. Big time players expect to join the log jam at big time programs.

Will like to see less top instate players going to ISU, Minny, MSU, Iowa. Win more of these battles against blue bloods. Long way before Jan, possibly get a flip or two from an instate recruit.

Maybe get a transfer from these top recruits at blue blood programs if they get recruited over as well.

Losing out on Illinois kids is sadly a fait accompli. We should do better as our results improve. Given the situation, and the quality of the kids were getting from elsewhere, I'm ok with this.

The only two Illinois '19 preps were truly painful (IIRC) were Bargy and Billingsley. If we land Randolph and Okpala, that pretty much negates the hit we took with Bargy. Billingsley? Not much to say.

For anyone that is interested, Robert does a good job explaining where we are with this years class and how choosy the coaches have to be. (Not saying they backed off on Billingsley or anyone in particular, just that we they have to be choosy with a small class)

It’s all in his LLUOI post for Fabian McCray.

That article was pretty informative. Thanks for posting
Let's hope the 3rd WR is Maurice Massey!
Side note: I ran into some twitter beef between him and Beason stemming from the Nike Opening Finals. Hope that doesn't deter him from choosing IL

Lets hope the rebuild goes as planned. If so, Dominic Bass at Chicago Phillips will be ready to pick a school right when we are hitting our stride. He MIGHT be the no. 1 ranked DT in the country by then.

It would be a very ala Isaiah Williams in terms of Trinity commitment

Massey said they were just joking around and are actually friends.

They went up against each other at the Friday Night Lights camp at Illinois and had some battles there as well.

I've heard some things about Massey that indicate he might need a good support system around him to keep him out of trouble. He looks at Cory Patterson as a father figure so Illinois might end up being a good fit for him.

I also heard the same things. My initial thought was that it is good for Illinois but at the same time, not every kid wants to be around a dad. Just depends on the kid really

Isaiah Williams falls like 200 spots in 247's latest recruiting rankings. Is he really just that small no matter how dang good he is or is it an Illinois thing?

I think it's a little of both. Before he was just an athlete and really really good football player. Now that they are defining him as a QB recruit (instead of just an athlete), they are establishing more of his height as a weakness due to his future position. I can understand a drop now that they can characterize him as a QB but this seems like a over correction.
