10% of the time those would be winning odds.

I don't think so...he was pretty much a spot up shooter 2 years ago, and I dont know if he is a far cry better than say Griffin might be...there is no way Griffin plays a 4 at any time.
He’s got 2 inches and about 30-40 lbs on Griffin. Griffin is a great shooter but Guerrier is overall a better player and has a much higher ceiling.

The majority of the illini fans want to see 2 things:
Results on the floor (winning)
Results on the recruiting front (top 50-100 talent on a regular basis)

Also they are tired of hearing the same old song & dance:
It takes time with "fill in the blank new coach"
Give it 2 or 3 years
Wait until 2020.... and then that never comes to fruition.

FTFY

I think the majority of us honestly couldn't care less about how many stars our players have as long as the results on the floor are good. Recruiting good players is a means to an end, not the end itself. I think we'd all rather be Bo Ryan's Wisconsin than Lorenzo Romar's Washington.

Signing recruits in the spring seems to be considered bad as we should sign all in spring. I am still reserving judgement until I see this year's class play. They look athletic in the clips and were all on winning teams. Still believe you can develop skills but not height or athleticism. They may be plan B but smart plan B. Guess you can sign the plan B's in the fall but going for broke in the fall at least gives you a chance.

Have you seen either one play?

I don't think that's particularly relevant to my post.

But we landed Tevian after an Arizona offer. Should we have told him not to visit because of course he's going to Arizona?

Look, Groce couldn't close. Underwood's ability is in doubt. We can see the proof.

Was Groce before and Underwood now really bad at discerning a recruit's honest interest in our program? It's a real possibility. But people are valuing Derek Piper (hell, even anonymous message board posters) over actual conversations that are happening between a coach and a player and various people around that player.

It's a fairly common failure of human nature. That portion of knowledge which I possess is superior to the things I don't know.
This is a wonderful summary of so many things . . .

In person? Of course not but I’ve seen some games online for both players. I think we’re overrating Griffin but I think he’ll be a good 3 and D player down the road as an upperclassman. I’m quite impressed with Guerrier though and think he can have an impact right away. Plenty of people have said that he’d be a top 50 guy if he lived in the US and I think that’s accurate. I also think that Griffin’s ranking of around 200th is accurate as well after seeing his ball handling and decision making. Back to Guerrier though, I think he would play the 4 for us if Kipper isn’t consistent on offense and doesn’t improve o defense.

Keep in mind once the ball hits the wing in the base offense it doesn’t matter who the 1, 2, 3, 4 is. Defensively yes. Offensively, if he’s not at the high post spot, it doesn’t really matter.

I agree with that in a more controlled defense, but with the pressure defense we play and the constant help and rotation it requires how often are we seeing an isolated 1v1 in the post defensive matchup?

Eh, often enough. And it's not like a wing guy is going to have the rim protection skills necessary to be the second layer of the defense either.

We were the most dunked-on team in America last year and I'll be pleasantly shocked if that doesn't repeat itself

Totally disagree about Griffin. His decision making?? Please elaborate.

Just Fyi you have bounced back and forth between three guys - Levingston, Carr and McDaniel. Not sure which pair you meant, but Levingston and Carr played together for three years from 1979-82, while all three played together the 1981-82 season and then Carr and McDaniel two years from 1981-83. I assume you meant Levingston and Carr because X didn't play much as a freshman, but the other two were a dominate tandem for three years averaging a combined 31, 34 and 30 ppg and about 17 rpg combined.

ACtually, I was a bit confused as to which pair I saw play in Terre Haute. It was a first round game and Notre Dame with Tripuka and Shumate, I believe played Austin Peay that day while I can't remember who the Shockers played. I was extremely impressed by the duo I saw play, but won't swear as to which two of the three I saw. You are likely correct and I know one was Levingston but I can't swear if the other was McDaniel or Carr. I changed the name to McDaniel after googling all three but was still not certain. I am certain the the coach was Gene Smithson from my hometown and whose brother was my coach in 8th grade. Gene was a little to given to winning and got the program in trouble with the NCAA per recruiting violations. Likely, some of that team that year was recruited a bit on the shady side....but those three were studs and as good as anyone around.

How many post up back down Shaq dunks did we see last year? I literally cant think of one but I will assume a couple happened. We get dunked on cause our perimeter guys can’t keep people in front of them consistently which leads to lobs and dumpoffs. You really think QG couldn’t keep a 4 in front of him? How many backdown, post up, bully you 4s are we worried about? Back down post ups are becoming the big man version of the mid range. Analytically inefficient.

I would like to see that stat from a real source. Most dunked on team. Or did you make that up?

Griffin and Gurrier both have somewhat limited film on them, and I would dare say not many have seen either live. Also not many would have wanted us to recruit either extensively either. I think Gurrier will be the overall bigger player (size), but I think there games may be similiar and Griffin will end up being a much better defensive player as well.

Anthony Welch vs Stephen Bardo similiar types at this point, based on sole possibilities obviously

If we can land Guerrier, then that's a major recruiting upset over the likes of Oregon and Syracuse. We'll see... Guerrier is inconsistently ranked, but I think his ceiling is as a top 40 player in the class of 2019. Some time with Fletch and Guerrier is NBA bound, he plays like a shorter Kevin Durant.

Take it easy on Oregon and Arizona. Their coaches are doing a great job under the scrutiny of federal investigators.

That's not an equivalent scenario. The coaching staff (and your sales reps) have a limited amount of time and resources to put into pursing recruits (or sales). You absolutely have to make decisions about where you are spending that time and those resources and part of that calculus is probably of success. Just because someone would be great for you system does not mean you go all in on them if they don't express a level of interest that gives you any confidence. We could have the whole staff follow James Wiseman around the country all season and it would be a colossal waste even though he would be an amazing pick up.

As a sales executive, I would never put 100% of my resources into one customer. However the bigger the opportunity the more resources you put toward that opportunity. You can use those same resources for multiple opportunities. However, we all get together as a group and determine which opportunities are viable and determine how much time and resources are going towards each opportunity. I'm sure all coaching staffs do the same sort of sales planning. This is done on a daily, weekly, monthly basis as opportunities constantly come and go. You have to be flexible and open to various opportunities.

Also remember, just as in sales, maybe your pitch is outstanding, your product good, but the client goes a different direction. Then next year they call you back, disappointed with their original choice, to give you an opportunity.

Maybe Liddell will be miserable in Ohio. I know many people there who are.

I have some doubt about that as well. I remember how easy it was for opponents to score in the paint and how much we struggled at times at the other end as well. That is why I am really concerned about the frontcourt this year, given our limitations last year. Every team will get dunked, but it really did not stand out to me that we got dunked an incredible amount, but that is just going from memory, I may be wrong.

I think our backcourt this year will be much improved, I really do. My concern is frontcourt and specifically the 4/5 positions. I think we are very shallow.

Yup, it's a question of resource allocation.
