Illinois 95, Minnesota 68 POSTGAME

Quick thoughts,
Ayo, keeps getting better, I hope wants another yr to grow into his NBA body, I want to see a yr of this team with Kofi, January + others, knowing the system .
Fr, everyone that doesn't start had a big part of this win, I could feel them think they are a part of this. Tev,Grif,Samba, can you feel them starting to get it.
GB, what can you say he is the recruiting steal of the year, hope we get 4 yrs.
Monte and AJ, highly efficient O/D, rebounds and help D. Monte coming out party?
Trent highly efficient, hurt by fouls + game and D.
Kip, at least listened to BU, did dirty work tonight, big help with their beef.

Homecooking, Orange Crush, team starting to figure it out, refs not in the way. I should have bought a lottery ticket.
.

My friends. The last three months have been the most trying of my life for reasons that have nothing to do with Illini basketball, though they certainly hadn’t been helping (#cancersucks).

Tonight was fun. Tonight was hope. I needed tonight more than I realized.

Glad to share it with you.

I L L
Prayers for you. Glad to see the Illini put a little sunshine in your life.

After the way the season has played out so far.... To see these guys working hard and not giving up, and to see them putting it all together and having a big win like this feels great. This is the type of win these guys have been needing. After all the doom and gloom and tough losses they have suffered, this type of win can change the trajectory for the rest of the season. I love this team and the fight they have displayed. I don't see how anyone can not be excited about the future of this program because it's getting brighter by the day

I want the best for Ayo, but man I don’t want this season to be his experience at Illinois. One. More. Year.
I've thought about the same thing over these last few games. If his shot becomes more consistent over the next 15 games or so....he's gone. He's getting better and better and at that size....he's a first rounder.

All depends on the jumper. That's his ticket.

Thanks to you and all for the prayers. My life is 99% sunshine, but that 1% has been a beastly black cloud over everything else. Just so fun to watch this game.

Watching post game now. Man I love Giorgi. Loved Dave Revsin pointing out that we “pried him from the clutches of Hofstra” in recruiting.

John 1970 - let’s do this brother.

Lots of impressive stats tonight but I’m most surprised by our +13 rebound margin. I can see 4 to 6 more wins possible if we continue to play like this.

best part of this win, is they can FINALLY show our current guys and recruits results of this system against a power-5 team.

other observations:

Ayo Dosunmu is not only the best illini freshman i’ve ever seen, but literally is one of the best players i’ve ever seen wear the orange and blue (started watching in 2005). Sure we had good players like BP3, Leonard, Rice, Hill etc. but none of them were as gifted of a player as this kid. If our record didn’t stick so much, he’d be a contender for FOY and POY in the big ten. If he comes back next year he’s a first-team all-big ten guy.

Trent: Really nice bounce back from him the last 1.5 games. Those finishes at the rim in the second half were great and loved his emotion. It is straight up scary to think how good this backcourt can be next year if we return everyone. He’s an all-big-tencplayer next year if he wants to be!

Griffin: Getting better each game, still makes a ton of little mistakes but love his game and potential. Will need to work on ball control over the offseason but should be a nice piece off the bench next year as a guy who brings energy, athleticism, length and a shot. Hope he continues to see more minutes.

Jones: MAN! This kid is just dying to stay on the court. He, like Griffin, needs to work on his dribbling and ball security, but he’s going to be such a great player down the road. His “coming out party” seems to be games away, if he can stay on the floor without fouling he brings so much more to this team. It’s almost like we’ve had this secret on our bench all year, but Im telling y’all, once he figures it out he will be a MAJOR piece to our rebuild and success in the coming years. LOVE LOVE LOVE his potential and attitude.

Kane: Soooo raw. Love his upside as well though, has decent footwork, has good shot blocking instincts, is long and can run. I don’t think we realistically see a ton of minutes from him until his junior year, but he’s going to be good as well.

*this post is making me realize how good of recruiters we have on this staff

Georgi: Boy, oh boy. This kid is a stud. Not only diamond in the rough on this team, but the best since Mike Davis, and he could be better. Reminds me of Mitch McGary at times and thinking of him, Kofi, January, Kane, Nichols manning the 4 and 5 next year is so exciting and would be a special frontcourt.

AJ: Good to see him knock down shots. He better buy Ayo a drink at Kams this weekend, because Ayos ability to drive and kick, finish, shoot opens up so many options offensively and tonight AJ shined in his role.

Kipper: Same ol Kip but starting to think that’s okay. The fact is, this roster and next year’s roster will have better players at the 3/4 spots. But that’s the point. We are over recruiting, he is still a fine players and young man, but don’t expect him to do much anymore. However; he has done it before, so I guess nothing would surprise me anymore from this kid. Maybe he scores 20 on Sunday, but if he does, i’d assume we’d lose the game.

Feliz: Did exactly what he needed to do tonight. Played hard, finished a the rim, ran the offense well, played good defense. Need that from him every night, he’s starting to understand the system more too.

Hope i’m not forgetting anyone, but I am stoked for the remainder of the year and next season. Obviously it’s easy to say these things after our first conference win in forever, but tonight was EXACTLY what we should see from this system and roster. Everyone flourished and played their role. Now it’s time to build build build. I-L-L

great win. lets keep this going!

I only got to see the last quarter of the game.

Did Underwood change anything up on offense or defense to help facilitate this performance?
Yes everyone shot well, great D, low fouls and TO, fr did great in reasonable minutes, GB ,Ayo, and Trent had between 15-23 points, great team win. You should watch the whole game.

Before I say this, I know it is easy to declare after a blowout, but I am all in on BU! I saw what I needed to see. A coach that can have a team buy in and keep working, especially after the demoralizing start of the season we had, is a winner! He answered the question of whether he was too tough too play for imho! You can’t take it, fine move on...he will ride you and play mind games with you but he will be your biggest fan. To those who worry about his recruiting (including me in past), I point to 5 Stars Ayo and Cockburn, I point to GB as ability to “uncover”talent, and I point to the powerful connections that seem to be on the build! Can the system actually work? That question answered tonight! Wait until there is just a little more talent to choose from 😧! Just have to be patient!!!

Illini move up 22 spots on Kenpom, now at #82. Impressive for a 5-12 team.

P.s. Illinihawk16 beat me by 5 minutes ago.:)

Phase 1: Operation Sandbag is over. Tonight was the start of Phase 2: Unleash the Fury. BU and the team planned this all along. Joke's on everyone else.

(I kid, but would be pretty cool if it was true)
