Zawaski said on last night’s podcast that Lee (Anders) wants to play in Chicago, and is willing to sign for less in Chicago than Minnesota is offering him. He'd be an awfully good fit. Don't want more than 5 years though.

Lee-Toews-Kane
DeBrincat-Strome-Shaw
Saad-Dach-Sikura
Caggiula-Kampf-Kubalik
Perlini

That is a VVG forward group.
Agreed. But how will they be cap compliant? Obviously Anisimov needs to be moved, but defensively, Seabs will almost certainly have to come off contract. Lee wont be a Hawk with anything near the reported 9M AAV, though maybe they can squeak that in, but given how much I expect Debrincat to command, and if Strome has a year anywhere near what he had in the 50+ games with the Hawks last year, their respective contracts might be very close. I'd expect them together to command close to 8-12M on a lower end.

I really think Bowman's painted himself into a corner with the contracts we have on defense. He's gonna have to find someway to get Seabs off the books for us to have a chance at making this thing work anytime soon.

Lee, at his purported price/term, is a complete no go. So, nevermind. If anyone's cognizant of cap hell, it's Bowman. Signing Cat and Strome is paramount.

As to Seabs: compliance buyout or LTIR. This will be his last season, IMO.

Underrated player, signing for 3 less years than Tanev and might offer same upside as him...this is pretty damn solid term and AAV...

Gotta get Kampf in the fold. 2 years @ $1.5M per? Same with Perlini, but Kampf is more important, IMO.

Shaw's cap hit is only $3.9MM. He is also only 27 and was on pace for 60+ points last season before the injury.

This is a good trade, especially since Kevin Hayes got 7.14M for essentially the same production.

Could fit in if Anisimov is moved.

Dale Tallon with two generational signings today. Not going to end well.

And we land Lehner! 1 year, $5M. Hawks are having an offseason.

Big bet on himself to land a long-term deal as the Hawks' starter. Unreal.

Curious, are hockey contracts guaranteed, or like football, where you get your money upfront, in case of getting cut? Sorry, I just a bandwagon fan during playoff runs.
They are guaranteed, although the contracts can be 'bought out' at a percentage rate with salary cap ramifications. It's much more player-friendly than the NFL.

Love Lee, but lol to that term. A 230# 34-35-36 yo: want no part of that. Last 2-3 years are going to be bad. Islanders didn't have much choice though.

No doubt. Hawks already have one of those and have tried to get rid of him.

Seabs will be a compliance buyout (with new NHLPA contract) or LTIR. Coming pretty soon (12-18 mo), I'd guess. Doesn't negate the fact that that contract was horrid before the ink dried. My theory, FWLIW: McCub bigfooted the process.

I dislike the concept of attributing the bad contract/roster moves to influence from either McD or Q. Stan's a big boy. It's possible for him to make mistakes and still be a good GM overall.

Think Gusev (Rooskie, lol) is a target. 26 yo rookie, who put up big numbers in the KHL. LV can't afford him. A deal between the two teams could make sense - Vegas had to send out Miller packing so their defense is thin - 5 under contract right now, Joker could step in and play for them immediately. Joker isn't exempt from the expansion draft.

+1. Bowman's made mistakes. WRT Seabs' contract: still think he had pressure from above, possibly even Rocky.

That's cool, but if you don't mind my asking, can you expand on why you think that's the case?

Full disclosure: you're pretty clearly a HF boards reader, as am I (although I rarely post). I feel like I see these sorts of explanations frequently for bad trades or signings, that it was somehow the fault of Q or McD for how a player was (mis-)used or why they were signed to a bad contract. I'm not interested in one of the endless Q vs Stan threads that happen there, just hoping this is a safe place to have a reasonable discussion without 5+ people jumping all over me with little laughter emoticons.

For Seabs, Stan has defended that deal from the minute it was announced, and I've never gotten the impression from anything he's said that he feels otherwise or that the deal was in any way forced on him. Did I miss something that indicates Stan wanted to walk away or do something like 5.5 x 6 and somebody on high made him go 6.8 x 8? I think Stan simply made a bad deal there and paid for past performance. It happens.

No evidence whatsoever. That contract is sooo bad, right from the get go, that I find it very, very difficult to believe that it was entirely Bowman's doing. I consider Bowman to be a shrewd GM (not infallible, no such thing). Hard to reconcile that utter albatross of a contract given solely by a savvy GM. Like religion, it's all belief.

Water under the bridge. Hopefully, the Hawks will be able to move past their Seabs blunder soon. I believe it's going to happen.

Yep, good call on HF boards. Gotta separate the wheat from the chaff. A lot of meatballs and yellers, but also a lot of very knowledgeable hockey fans. I've learned a lot from the Hawks board over the past ~5 years.

Nice handle. Really enjoyed those movies back in the day.

Thanks for the sane reply. I try to limit myself only to the HF threads about prospects because I think the rest is mostly chaff, but I still can't help myself a lot of times. They do a good job moderating there but even then there's so much rehashing of the same tired arguments. I'm interested to see what happens this season now that Q is back in the league.

Stan has mostly avoided conflict when re-signing guys - he doesn't seem to want drawn-out, acrimonious negotiations. I think it's valid criticism that we then wind up with some contracts that could have had lower cap hits if Stan had driven harder bargains. Seabs is obviously in that group and T/K were re-signed to their large numbers as soon as they were eligible. That said, we also won a Cup in 2015 after T/K signed those contracts, and it's quite possible that doesn't happen if they are worrying about their next contracts, so I think Stan's style has certainly had some benefits.

Enjoyed your character's movie as well. Saw that one back in the day with my parents before the content advisories were readily available. Slightly uncomfortable...

The T/K contracts were generous, but fair. The assumption was that the cap growth would be fairly good, but then the Canadian dollar cratered. Stuff happens.

The good GMs learn from their mistakes. Bowman has been on a tear for the past ~year.

It's a strange system. Plenty of GMs have enough trouble just identifying and properly prioritizing hockey talent. They shouldn't also have to worry about the global oil market and its impact on the Canadian dollar. Then the league didn't even publish this year's number until the draft was already under way, making it that much harder for teams to plan and adjust properly.

Whenever a big contract is signed people immediately convert it into % of the cap number to compare it to other contracts. This is how the agents think also. They should just write the contracts as % of the cap and be done with the nonsense of worrying about whether the cap is 2m less than originally expected. Just stay at or under 100% by the start of the season and you're compliant.

Indeed. Great point about hockey GMs. That economics has such a big role in the cap, and GMs are expected to accurately forecast it: well, the cigar is going to blow up in a lot of faces. This is a great offseason to have cap space!
