Bote at short and Happ at second is a combo we should never see again.

This right here. If I recall, Maddon burned Kemp so he had no one to play second in the 9th. And he had no back up shortstop on the roster, either. If they don't want Russell round, call up Zack Short. But someone has to be play SS better than Bote and someone has to play 2nd better than Happ.

Not sure which was worse: bullpen, infield defense, or managing

Boy, that's a tough one. The only issue I had with Maddon is him burning Kemp too early, although I guess with a 5-1 lead, you'd expect your relief pitchers to be able to hold that. Strop and Holland were bad yesterday. Wick had a broken bat hit that lead to a run but otherwise was good. Don't recall off the top of my head what Ryan did. Guys have to be able to do their jobs in relief. Not sure why they took out Yu. I thought he could have gone another inning since he was at 91 pitches or something similar, through 7.

I guess it's a tie between D and RP.

I'd rather see Rizzo at SS than Russell, who was just recalled today.

Almora down to AAA.

Non-baseball issues aside, Russell is a better player than Almora right now. I saw a thing a couple days ago that showed that Almora was 148th of 150 qualified players in adjusted OPS over the last calendar year.

He is literally one of the worst three offensive regulars in baseball over the last year. I have no idea why he was getting any play ahead of Schwarber, and wonder if this is a case of Theo taking one of Maddon’s toys away.

Cubs are lucky that the Cards and Brewers are mediocre like they are.

What the heck is going on with Rizzo? Two homers in fifty games.

This Little League classic is a very cool event. Loved the uniforms.

Eloy Jimenez Quintana with a desperately needed 7 shutout innings tonight.

Cubs won their first road series since May. Only took playing a team that's 7-27 since the All-Star Break with the last game of the series at a neutral site to make it happen.

The good news is that 11 of their next 14 are at home.

With the news that Jake Arrieta is going to have season ending surgery, I looked back at the Cubs’ decision to go with Darvish over Arrieta. The consensus was that the Cubs were going to sign one of the two, although hindsight might be that they shouldn’t have signed either, and instead have gone with a cheaper option like Chacin, Mikolas or Minor.

Still the Cubs favored Darvish from the start and eventually signed him for 6 years at $126MM. Arrieta signed a really complicated contract with the Phillies that looks like it’s going to be a 3 year $75MM contract when it’s all said and done.

Darvish’s first year was a complete disaster, only pitching 40 innings. Arrieta had the better year by default, although it wasn’t up to the standards of his years with the Cubs. This year, Darvish has been the better pitcher and seems to be getting better and more comfortable as he goes along. Arrieta got hurt.

In the aggregate, Arrieta has pitched 308 innings with a 4.26 ERA and Darvish has pitched 179 innings with a 4.37 ERA, but should get another 50-ish innings this year and has seen his ERA going the right direction over the last couple months. Arrieta has been paid $55MM and Darvish has been paid $45MM.

I don’t think there’s any question who the vast majority of people would pick to have next year - Darvish at $22MM or Arrieta at $20MM. Arrieta is having surgery. Even though he’s supposed to be healthy come Spring Training, it’s still an easy choice. After that Arrieta heads to free agency while Darvish will have three years left at a very reasonable $59MM.

Looking at the list of 2021 free agents, it’s hard to see any potential free agents as accomplished as Darvish signing a 3 year, $59MM contract.

So, I think you can still argue that the choice between Darvish and Arrieta should have been “neither,” but if you had to choose one, the Cubs might still have gotten it right even though the first year was a complete blow out.

Castellanos has really solidified the top of the lineup. He’s exactly what they needed in the #2 spot.

Heyward, Castellanos, Bryant, Rizzo, Baez, followed by hopefully a healthy Contreras is a great 1-6 in the lineup. Schwarber May never be a super-star but he is a very solid #7. Ride the hot hand at 2b, and you have what should be a really potent lineup heading into the playoffs.

Outside of the bullpen, my worries are minimal toward this team.

And for those who missed it, here's Castellanos' reaction on the bases after Bryant's go-ahead home run.

I wouldn't put my worries as quite that dramatic.

With how they’ve performed this year, I feel our bullpen could easily be what sinks a playoff run.

Especially in the NLDS where blowing one game is huge. Or heaven forbid, if we have to do the wildcard play-in game...

I just don’t trust the pen in late innings. Let’s hope it all clicks in time to get us in/keep us in the playoffs.
