That Iowa game was never close. We were back and forth in the lead with Baylor until midway thru the second half. Big differnce.

Actually the crosscourt feeds to open DMW were very effective. DMW was snakebit with fouls they called.

This is a good team, but so far I don't think this year's team is better than last year's team. This was supposed to be the year we built on last year's success, and I'm not seeing it yet. Maybe we get there but we're 8 games into a 25 game season so time to prove it already.

I agree. We have the potential to be alot better than last year if Curbelo can be that co-alpha of the team with Ayo, but if he's just going to be a guy off the bench, then all we've done is swapped Griffin/Feliz for Miller, and that's a net loss. I think most of us counted on Kofi to be lot better this year than he's been, but he's made no progress since last season. If he's the same player, then the team leap is going to have to come from Curbelo. If Curbelo's only getting 20 minutes a game, then we aren't better than last year.

yep key difference...iowa was down by 20ish til a late rally that never got within like 10

Tough game. We hit our pt average (88) against a great defense on the road. I think people are starting to realize that this Rutgers team is for real and has a good chance to win the conference. So to keep the game this close was actually encouraging. On to the next one.

None of our losses have been to bad teams but in each loss we have met the enemy and it has been us. We are plagued by silly turnovers, fouls, spotty rebounding and only 2 to 3 players contributing. Right now there are several teams like us in the country that can win on any given night but not consistently. I'ts early but taking care of our issues better come soon or the only thing we will have at the end of the season will be dtsappointment.

I take your point but given the departures of Dre and Alan and the fact that Curbelo and Miller are freshmen, albeit great talents,, I took for granted that they need some time to learn to play together and that Curbelo and Miller are going to flail in the deep end of the pool occasionally for a while. It's not unusual early in the season. If we're seeing this in mid-to-late January then I will become concerned. And if I see consistently erratic play against Indiana or Purdue in Champaign I'll begin to scratch my head a bit. But not v. Top 20 Rutgers on the road in the RAC, fans or no.

Look at KenPom. We were #11 at 5-2 before the game. Rutgers was #18. MSU was #20. No. Not worried.

The fouls that took DMW off the court made a huge difference. He had Harper, Jr. locked up (think Lamar Stevens at PSU last year) and then he got hot with Giorgi and gang losing him on the perimeter several times. Until that point Young was all they had. Also the best thing to happen to Rutgers was Omoruyi getting hobbled as he was absolutely roasted in his minutes and Johnson made life much more difficult, except for Curbelo. Both Frazier and Ayo had lobs to Kofi disrupted by him while the game was still in grasp.

The team definitely has flaws. We have trouble getting everyone firing on all cylinders at the same time. We are not a good free throw shooting team for some reason, and we are way too loose with the ball at times. Hopefully, that will not be the case as guys get more comfortable in their roles and gain experience.

It is a broken record, I know, and I know the game is sometimes difficult to officiate. But, a 21 attempt discrepancy at the free throw line suggests much more than one team playing more aggressively or better than the other. I'm sorry, but until the league decides that officiating must get better, the big ten will continue to have teams that have 5-8 losses on the year and receive a 4-8 tournament seed as a result. I know...there are occasional 1/2 seeds, but the officiating affects the flow and results of way too many games and the league will go another 20 years without a national champion until somebody in authority decides that the Big10 must match the most talented players in the nation with the best officiating talent - or at least much better. Just my opinion.....and I will not post another time about officiating the rest of the year. But it's to a point where it is just not enjoyable watching any games we play away from home. There were very few fouls called in the first 15 minutes of the game and it was so enjoyable to watch, then the whistles started. Sorry for the rant, but it is so frustrating to see us playing well and then the fouls start coming out of nowhere and usually one direction and the flow to the game completely stops. I know we did not play well in the second half but I feel like that was partly not all on our guys.

I’m not disagreeing with you, but today, and in the Miznoz game, we had the same late game flurry to make it closer than it seemed when watching it.

Having said that, I am not trying to suggest we can’t become the more dominant team we believe we’re capable of being.

Yes, he's been disappointing since that big opening game. Sort of wish he had started more quietly, so that this wouldn't be such a let down.

Free throw attempts is where we lost.

Though you can probably tie those to defense and rebounding as we fouled a bunch while trying to play D and rebound.

All three losses are top 20 opponents and not at home. Nothing to be scared of but def be pissed about not winning extra points with house money.
