Illinois 80, Iowa 75 Postgame

Its my birthday and I can't ask for a better present. My 15 year old son, and my 14 year old son, and I watched the game together while I enjoyed some blue label, a lot of blue label. When we went down in 2nd half my 15 year old said dad you need to go drink in basement (thats our good luck charm) ....I came back up for last 2 mins and my 15 year old and 14 year old shared a big hug at the end of the game and I got...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!

Can't Ask for more......
Happy Birthday and I-L-L

Iowa has lot of skilled talent, but man are they soft. No effort on defense, no ball pressure, its just lazy basketball on that end. I don't think they'll get very far in the tourney without playing defense. Illinois, I really don't even think we played our best game, but we definitely played harder than Iowa. Ayo and Frazier did have their best games. The rest of the guys really didn't stand out.

We do seem to play better against soft up and down teams like Iowa, than teams like Mizzou/Ohio State etc who tend grind out games physically.

But they don't even have a lot of skilled talent they have a big man that can get a bucket anytime anywhere and some guys that can be lights out from 3. They have some good actions and can move the ball but they don't have anyone that can break you down off the dribble like Ayo or Curbelo. Their offense consists of throwing it in to Garza or lots of off ball screens and cutting.

And they are still soft as warm butter.

Kofi was great tonight (maybe a contrary opinion to some). Terrific interior defense and rebounding, did good job not letting Garza get open threes. Scored a little and could have done more sealing and creating passing lanes to get the ball down low but did a good job when he got the ball. he’s a terrific player and is piling up excellent performances. we are lucky to have him and the coaches have done a great job developing him

Let's make a note if this one. Bad call against us (the goaltend whistle) works out to be good for us. Cost them a put-back and the possession arrow. Have we ever before been helped by a bad call against us?
Fwiw, I'm not sure it was absolutely clear that the ball was still on it's way up, but I'll take it.

Looking at the replay, it's clear that Kofi was the one to hit it off the glass. It was still going up and wasn't goaltending.

Yep, unless it was a really terrible shot the ball is on it's way up until it hits the board. They got it right on replay thankfully.

Agreed, his defense was markedly better in the second half... And proved the best defense against Garza is taking it on him on D. He's not a ++ defender and we have the shooters to make them pay if they bring help.

I hate Iowa as much as anyone...Illinois side QC’s hate for Iowa is visceral...but I like Garza. He was joking around with Kofi right before play started in the second half and gave Kofi a couple pats on the back...the other Hawks...Kofi can give them the same “pat” he gave that ref last year.

Garza seems like a good dude from a good family.

Fran and his boys (maybe the young one, I don't know) suck.

The players were lot more friendly with each other this year than last year. Frazier helped up an Iowa player after taking a charge in the 1st half. I think not having a crazy crowd in the building is making these games far less intense/angry/nervy at least for the guys playing.

It should come as no surprise the Iowa fans are crying foul after a loss. You should see their wrestling fans... There’s a reason why we know them as the “Squawk eyes”
