Illinois 75, Wisconsin 60 Postgame

Come on Sesc - I love the conversation. Think about it. "We are debating if we are watching the most impressive Illini season ever". Beautiful
To paraphrase Deron when the comparison between the 2005 and 1989 started before the final four...."lets not start this sh... again"

This was not a great Illini game...nor is anyone with 18 turnovers. But it was a horrific shooting performance by Wisky who shot air ball after airball (yes most drew iron but most did not even hit inside the cylinder). But they kept shooting and when you are hitting 17% of them, you WILL GET YOUR TAIL WHIPPED. If Illini take care of the ball better, they win by 25+ easily.

Yet there were several good areas of performance and I would rate the overall performance as a bit above normal.

Turnovers were the big negative, but hasn’t that been an issue all season...? I can’t think of a game where we played a better 40 minutes of basketball this year. Second half of Minnesota and second half of Northwestern the only ones that come to mind. Both 1st halves were not good. Sure, Wisconsin shot horribly, but we forced them into long 2s, and also forced more turnovers than they cough up on average. I think Kofi’s interior defense set the tone early, and other than Tyler Wahl in the first half and a few Reuvers floaters in the 2nd half, I can’t really remember an easy Wisconsin basket. Gotta give credit where it’s due despite the turnovers (a lot of which came from Curbelo who clearly just didn’t have it today).

Locked in on defense for 40 minutes. As long as they start there, the rest will take care of itself. The stars were stars on national television. They might have opened a few eyes today!

No doubt. It's easy to bash him but we have to keep in mind that he's a freshman. He looked every bit of it today. He'll bounce back.
And we still won by 15. It's pretty nice to have that kind of buffer allowing for him to grow into the role.

Who would have thought...lose home games to Maryland and Ohio St. back to back , and win back to back home games against Iowa and Wisconsin(with Indiana sprinkled in there on the road).. moving forward maybe them losses are blessings in disguise that this team needed.

Well, this is on the heels of a 2-11, rough outing vs IU. Ayo is a GREAT player, but 16 years later and the farther that team gets in the rear window, it's gets easier for people to discount how truly elite and consistent that DW was. Now, I said the same thing in 2005 about the 1989 team. After 16 years, people started to discount how incredible that team was. The 1989 team beats the 2005 team by 20 points+. It's borderline criminal that team didn't win it all.

Anyway, great win, great performance by Ayo, Kofi and Co.....my heart rate stayed below 150 bpm for the first time in a couple of weeks.

Deron williams went 0-7 against indiana, 2-7 agaist purdue, 1-7 against ohio state in 2004-2005 reg season

then 3-9 against fairleigh dickinson and 2-7 against louisville in the tourney

Just easy to forget those so many years later and even more easy to forget when you have 4 other upperclassmen nba prospects on the team to pick up your slack when youre off

all of our greats have had some rough outings id imagine if you looked back

At the end of the day, just fun that we have a guy we can have this convo about.

To some degree I think our high number of turnovers are a product of our pace and our willingness to make risky passes in search of higher percentage shots. We could slow it down and forego some of those passes and we'd cut down on turnovers pretty effectively, all the while ruining our overall offensive efficiency.
And Curbelo minutes........

And Curbelo minutes........
Curbelo totaled 8 minutes today. Ayo ended up with 7 turnovers to "lead" the team, but everyone pitched in on the runover game today. Which is Wisconsin's defensive gameplan, since they couldn't compete on the rebounding end.

Ayo is a monster, he just keeps getting better and better. He’s up there with Deron, Frankie, and Dee for me. Major stud.
I agree. I think my age makes it harder for me to accept but dang!!!! Ayo makes me so happy he chose the O&B!!! What a performance today.

I wish I could give a photo credit on this shot - I don't have that info, but it's from Badgerwire. I love it because it looks like Potter is setting a screen for Ayo - and Ayo looks pretty happy about it!

Curbelo will play, when other teams pressure the ball more you will need his handles. When Trent and Adam's shots are off and Ayo is being denied the drive you will need Andre.
This is so on the money. Curbello had a bad game against a bad match up for him. He is a fresh for gods sake. He will play in the tourney and he will turn some heads this year.
