NCAA Tournament

#377
"March Madness," the term used to describe the excitement surrounding the Illinois state high school basketball tournaments, first appeared in print almost sixty years ago. It was coined by Henry V. Porter, who started his career as a teacher and coach at Athens High School in central Illinois.
Yes, but did he trademark it?

I am not sure if this has been mentioned on here yet but those of you like me that already bought tickets to both sessions of the elite eight games on Monday 29 March thinking that was our night per the initial schedule need to root hard against BYU. NCAA realized they screwed up by putting BYU in the east which would play Sunday/Tuesday sweet 16 elite 8. BYU cannot play on Sunday due to religious reasons. NCAA said this week that if BYU makes sweet 16 they will flip Midwest and east region dates. Thus we would then be playing sun/Tuesday and we have tickets for the wrong night. Ridiculous mistake by NCAA.

We know about it. Can't do anything about it but wait to see what happens.

How should the NCAA have paired BYU differently?

Regarding the OSU loss. The team was tired. You could see it in their defensive sets. They looked drained mentally and physically.
I attribute the fatigue to the B1G tourney and the OT game v Illinois. 4 games in 4 days against top competition is no joke.
Regarding Purdue, they're not that good.
Wisconsin, played well. Rutgers, played well. MSU needs B1G refs and preferential treatment from refs to win. And for that matter the NCAA too. State shouldn't have even been in the tourney.
The narrative that the B1G didn't represent is false in my mind. To me, the cream rises to the top, and when the sweet 16 is set. The narrative will change.
That being said, I'm glad OSU is out of the tournament.
One last note. McBride from UWV is a good player. My gut tells me west Virginia v the beloved in the regional final.

Re: BYU

Every region has a Sunday game, because the second weekend (Saturday start) is not aligned with the first weekend (Friday start).

Fri-Mon First Weekend
Fri,Sun - Midwest, South
Sat,Mon - East, West

Sat-Tue Second Weekend
Sat,Mon - Midwest, South
Sun,Tue - East, West

The Selection Committee did their job placing BYU in the East (no Sunday games this weekend). The issue is about why did the NCAA & TV partners have a mis-aligned first & second weekend? Why do the 2 weekends start on different days of the week? And after they settled on this schedule why didn't they flip the second weekend's regional schedules?

So now, if BYU advances to the Sweet 16 the NCAA will flip the East & Midwest second weekend schedules.

If BYU beats UCLA tonight, it sends the Midwest Region into a holding pattern as they'll have to wait for BYU's Monday result-

* The Sunday Midwest Region winners will have to wait until Monday night before they know the date of their Sweet 16 games.
* The Sunday Midwest Region winners could potentially have an unprecedented full week (Sunday-Sunday) between Round of 32-Sweet 16 games.

Fun stuff 😄

Well, in the bracket pool that @B-ILL created, there are three pages of participants and probably 90+% of them picked Illinois, so if that really does jinx us, then we were always going to be screwed.
What 90% did is irrelevant....I personally am the one who would jinx the Illini and I refused to do so....therefore earning the eternal credit of Illini nation. Why you ask? The entire world is in a conspiracy against me...and only me....personally. And don't dare have the audacity to call me paranoid....I am not!!! God is also not on my side since I beat him 4 ways in a $5 Nassa back in '69. Teammate of mine took him and his son on at Pebble Beach. Last time I ever hit a solid 1 iron when I hit it 10 ft. away on 18. So there is that as additional proof. Thank me anytime....or not.

Maybe already posted but I feel like our Baylor loss early in the season will work to our advantage if we face them again. We were working out the kinks and transitioning our offense. Maybe we lull them into false confidence and shock them in the win?

Is Kansas over seeded? (Or whatever it means to be seeded too high?)

I feel like they will offer very little resistance against Gonzaga should they meet.

"no league has been more disappointing to start this year's tournament than the Big Ten"

Big Ten - 3-3

ACC - 1-4 (including two head to head losses to Big Ten)
Typical lazy press. Writing with an agenda instead of with facts. Column was probably written before the results of the games.

It really wasn't a mistake tho. They chose to not have BYU play on Sunday in the second round if they win their first game. The days flip the second weekend. So just kicking the problem down the road and it probably will sort itself out.

One could argue the mistake was letting the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight slide an extra day. I don't really mind it, but why did they do that?

Could it have to do with testing the week between games? The closer they get to the end, I imagine they'd want to be more vigilant about covid.
