It's not really an adjustment if your team plays 33% of your defense in a zone on average. As much as I wanted underwood to go zone, it's understandable that he didn't because our team never played zone.
Well that's a problem. I wish Underwood had the team practice this for certain situations throughout the season. You never know when you will need to switch to it. Even though we didn't go zone doesn't mean we shouldn't have been prepared to play it.

As someone whose second team is Oregon State but isn’t particularly a fan of Wayne Tinkle (though have to admit he’s done a nice job second half of this season), it pains me to see Tinkle have a better game plan than BU. WT did have the advantage of seeing the Illini-Loyola game as a prep, but still.

Watching this game so far it's clear we didn't defend them the right way. Playing off of Krutwig was such a mistake. OSU is all over Krutwig every time he gets the ball. We should have played up on him and running a second guy on him.
You can say what you want about defending Krutwig, but the bottom line was we scored 24 in the first half, 58 total, and were beaten by a better team that day.

One reason I love this board is we have so many coaches post on here. If only Underwood would listen.
Eh, it’s kind of sad when people on here post “go zone” and he doesn’t. Then Oregon State does, and they’re actually in the game. Don’t have to be a coach to understand basketball.

I can say what I want about defending Krutwig? OK I did. Anyway. We gave up 33 in the first half and if we play differently on defense they don't score 33.

A heartfelt thank you to both teams for reminding us what games looked like in the pre-shot clock era. I hope I don't die of boredom before the final buzzer.

Beavers shooting well from three. Loyola not. Beavers probably making tougher shots than Loyola is missing.

I think he should practice it some as well, but at the point of the tournament and a 1 day prep, you can't prepare in that time frame. It hurts seeing the zone bug loyola, but like I said, it's understandable why Underwood didn't try it. At the end of the day, our coach was thinking the same thing we were all game. Sooner or later we will make a run and take over. It just never happened...

Rightfully. Hope it’s a lesson he uses to improve rather than blaming it on an off game.

Not really. That zone is causing lot of hesitation, deflections. Nothing simple. If your opponent shoots 4-23 from the field for a half, the defense has something to do with it
I can think of at least five wide open 3’s that Loyola has missed. I do agree that zone has knocked them out of sync. And is one of reasons they only have 16 points. Missing wide open shots is another.

When was the last time an Illinois coach used zone a lot? Trying to think. Don't recall Groce or Weber employing it much.
