College ball is going to be just like any one of those neighborhood games we all play/played in at the community gym or out on some blacktop where you choose up sides and have at it. The only difference now is that the choosing-up-sides will happen every season on a bigger stage and you hope to piece together enough good players to keep “Getting Next”. And both sides get to be “Shirts” with no “Skins” needed.

I don’t in any way regret all the nice things I said about Miller yesterday. He initially chose the Illini when so many other in-state talents over the years quickly turned their backs on the Prairie State and went elsewhere. If for whatever reason it didn’t work out the way he wanted, so be it. You make your choices and make your life changes and live with the consequences. When we dump on somebody for leaving, we justify (in their minds) that they chose to go away. But when you wish them well (honestly) and show good will to them, it makes them question if they did the right thing. And even if they don’t do that, it’s still a good attitude to project. And new talent out there can see that.

Illini Nation is rightfully dazed and confused after a shocking and disappointing flameout in the Dance and now the departure of one of the future’s centerpieces. But the Illini program must be more about reloading-oriented just like the (other) Blue Bloods who have a guy around for one season and then leaves. The Beloved have to be about more than any one guy regardless who that might be or what the circumstances are.

Trent, Ayo, DaMonte, and Kofi have laid the foundation for a lofty program back up where the Illini belong. Time to hand it off to the next wave of talent who value the Orange and Blue and have the passion for it like all those just-mentioned guys have.

And if TOO many guys want to leave... then we know a big problem is elsewhere.

Good luck, Adam. Hope you find your Place In The Sun. You (and Illini Nation) will all be fine.

As others have noted, this is the new normal. Reviewing ESPN's top 40 recruits from 2020, the following have all chosen to transfer after their first year:
14 (Walker Kessler), 22 (Nimari Burnett), 27 (Khristian Lander), 30 (Adam Miller), 31 (Jaemyn Brakefield), 37 (Earl Timberlake), 38 (Jabri Abdur-Rahim). There will be more in the upcoming days. And the bulk of the top 30 are going to go pro. So, overall there will only be 6-10 players in the top 40 that end up playing a Sophomore year at the same school as their Freshman year.

Overall I like Miller and thought he could make a big leap offensively by how his defense improved. The circumstances of the announcement feel a little impulsive to me: On a vacation somewhere warm, wants to play in a warm place; not talking to team/staff before; short “transfer” message instead of the typical ones we see. My unconnected read is he has influence pushing him over the decision point and he may feel a little iffy about it.

Either way, while it’s disappointing, we’ll be fine.
Staff showed a lot more this year to sell recruits compared to what we had last year and especially the year before that. Banners don’t lie. (okay one from this year does..)

Welp, the NCAA has always kept the keys to the car and refused to let kids drive. This is what it's like when the kids get the keys.

Adam Miller leaving makes zero sense. There’s not another school in the country where he will get more shots or play more minutes than Illinois.

Him leaving now makes it seem like he was always “anywhere but Illinois” - hence signing late last year. I knew there were rumors last year he wouldn’t end up at Illinois, but I thought for sure once he came he’d stay.

Can’t blame Underwood here. He started him all season

Real tired of hearing this until we actually have them on our team
The fact that we had a GREAT run and ended the season ranked #2 is a great recruiting tool. Spot now open with AM gone helps a TON!

Damn this one legit hurts, at least personally. I’ve followed Adam since he was a high school freshman and absolutely loved his game. Was worried blue bloods would get him but he stayed home. Then that first game...had kind of a rough year but I was really proud of his progress towards the end of the year. Thought him and Curbelo would be a perfect duo next year. I’m sad man.
Though I will say his Ace Wolf persona is about the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. And the drama with Michigan after he committed should have been a sign...oh well, hope the staff can fill this hole well.

I'm not surprised. While he did always start, he was never in at the end of the games that mattered. He was kind of one dimensional on offense this year. Was looking forward to seeing year 2 though lol

Hate to see him leave, but I just didn’t see a dynamic, well-rounded game from him.

That said, I thought Ayo’s freshman year was disappointing, and he had an incredible career and impact on the program so what do I know.

But Ayo was all in and just an incredible player/person. If kids aren’t all in, I’m glad they can explore other options now.
