Chester Frazier joins Illinois coaching staff

I saw a few posts asking why it needed to be an alumni, and that they were underwhelmed by the hire. Did Underwood come in and immediately hire a bunch of “IllinoisGuys”? Nope. Did he hire a great staff, Yes! The fact that Chester bleeds orange and blue is awesome, but NOT the reason he was hired. If he wasn’t highly thought of, he wouldn’t be here. I am loving this hire! ILL!!

What has Chester Frazier done or what is he known for at this moment in coaching other than being an alum? Maybe we want to work that area? But man, I have to say that this is looks like a step down from either of the two coaches we lost.
Check the link to the VT message board thread. It reflects that he was held in pretty high esteem. They expected him to leave only for a JC position and they’re worried his recruits will follow him. Also said their defense will likely suffer. There was also great footage of him as an AC for Weber at KSU running practices.

Sarah, Chester's wife, is from O'Fallon. She's thrilled to be home.
And not only that, but my dear mother's heartthrob and one of my favorite actors was William Holden, who was born in O'Fallon. Cool! Makes no sense, but I like the connection however dubious. Chester and Mrs. Chester for presidents!

This is for anyone not real familiar with Chester. Pretty well dogged by a lot of fans first 3 years. Senior season led one of Illinois's grittiest teams to a 24-10, 11-7 season, 5 seed. Nice team but had no business being this good except for Chester and Trent Meacham. One of my all time favorite teams. This is a copy/paste of an article written by Paul Klee. Kind of long, but well worth the read if you want to know Chester a bit. Enjoy!

For those of you worried about Frazier's recruiting chops.......this story...his story...will play very well in living rooms with some of these kids and their parents.

This is absolutely an upgrade to this staff.

Harry Combes played basketball at Ilinois and was coach for 20 years until 1967...do you still remember Lou Henson??? :ROFLMAO:
Yea I should as I went to Central where the gym is named after combs and he obviously coached at Central also. Old age and dementia :). Thanks for bringing my memeory back!

I agree. I don’t get all the excitement for this. I’m underwhelmed. If this is plan A, I’m worried about what’s coming next.
I don’t get what you don’t get. This is an awesome hire. In my opinion, already an upgrade over Chin in terms of energy, youth, and coaching ability. May not have the same connections but clearly brings some recruiting chops. Antigua will be tougher to replace.

I didn’t realize he was associate head coach at VT. Is there any difference between associate head coach and assistant head coach? Is one title more senior to the other? I assumed until now that they were different terms for the same role but what do I know lol…

INI Coach Frazier! As an aside, does anyone know if Coach Frazier has a relationship with Maryland '22 prep prospect Mady Traore? Also some other interesting prospects in the Maryland class of '22.

Couldn't be happier for Coach Frazier. It's been a long while, but IIRC he was much maligned as a player. Some of it deserved, some of it not. Played with a chip on his shoulder, and proved the doubters wrong. I expect he'll bring that same attitude as a coach. If he can instill that attitude in the players then I think we'll be in great shape in the years to come.

Teammates loved him and he busted his butt day in and day out. That's pretty much all I care about for his playing career.

He was maligned as a player. He played tough defense but couldn't score, which would not have been as big of an issue but he played with a lot of other guys who were offensively challenged as well
