At least we are prepared for BR's reaction to losing a recruit to a Blue Blood.

Kentucky basketball - where number 1 matters most.
That's not good news for UK fans. If you look at Coach Cal's history, seems to me he jumps ship a year or so before the NCAA enforcement team comes to town and lays the lumber on the program. See: UMass and Memphis. He has the rare distinction of being the only coach to have TWO Final Four appearances vacated by the NCAA.

I said it while Chin and O were looking to jump on Cal’s staff, one more bad year and I think he leaves. And their success this year is far from guaranteed. They brought in Frederick, Oscar T. And the kid from Davidson to try and shore things up. But not sure Hopkins or TyTy move the needle like some of their past blue chippers. Especially with the SEC strengthening due to the, um, methods of Alabama, Auburn, and LSU this could easily be a middle of the pack, bubble type UK team.

Pretending UK's talent level makes them a bubble team is silly. They've got more than enough talent to be really good, as usual. That doesn't mean they will be, of course. They still have to play and win games, but it won't be for lack of talent if they flop.

Isn't UKs "problem" that the talent doesn't get old at UK - perennially young team that works when the talent matures and gels?

Last year they went 9-16 and not sure the current roster is significantly better. Maybe TyTy is the real deal, but based on his highlights if I had to choose between Belo and TyTy I would take Belo.

It sure seems that way. Most of the blue bloods struggled this year without sufficient summer/fall practices because the freshman-laden teams seemingly didn't really have time to jell. Only Kansas really turned that corner in time. Duke and UK flopped. They all had talent, obviously. They just didn't become real teams in time for it to matter.

Take my opinion with a grain of salt, but Randle doesn't make much sense to me, at least not from his perspective. He's in his first season as an assistant coach with a very good, young Phoenix Suns team after a two year stint in Minnesota as a video coordinator in 2018-2019 and player development in 2019-2020. Why leap to your 4th different role in 4 years with your 3rd different team (Not to mention a change from NBA to college)? If his goal was to be a college coach, why not start there after retiring from playing in Europe? That being said, I think he'd be a solid addition.

Royal Ivey (Brooklyn Nets assistant coach) has made more sense to me since his name was brought up. It seems that he wants to coach college ball as Durant has petitioned Texas to hire him as their next head coach as recently as March (and was interviewed for the position prior to Chris Beard being hired). If Ivey is wanting a stepping stone college gig, I think Illinois would be a great spot for him to build his resume to eventually become a head coach. I know people don't like the idea of being a stepping stone, but as long as he sticks for 2+ years, I think Ivey would be a good get. Think of the recruiting pitch Ivey has, he's a good friend of Durant (played with and coached him), and I think a lot of the top 25 guys in the country model their game after Durant and look a lot like him when he was in high school/college. Durant was listed at 6'-9" and 190 lbs and could score at all 3 levels coming out of high school compare that to guys we've offered in the top 25 like JJ Taylor (6'-8", 185lbs, 2023), Kwame Evans (6'-8" 190lbs, 2023). I think having someone who's friends with Durant and has coached top guys at an NBA level (Harden, Irving, Durant, etc) would be a solid recruiting pitch.

That being said, it could be one of these two, either of which I think would be solid hires, or someone else completely. I just think Ivey makes more sense when viewing it from their perspectives and possible coaching aspirations based on what's been reported.

This is a great take.

Ivey has extensive New York and East Coast ties where Brad has gotten a ton of players already. Very connected internationally as well.

The NBA angle seems like it makes the most sense, but there are other possible hires that can currently be tied up as well. Don't put all your eggs in the NBA basket.
Personally, I'm good with either Randle or Ivey, and open to others as well. So, what might be some non-NBA possibilities (and reasons for the hold-up)? Current or former head coach, analyst, high school coach??? I'm not arguing, but asking because I don't know.

Just going off what Josh said yesterday, they've got their guy. Just waiting on the time to announce it because he is still coaching and contractually obligated.

They both make sense for different reason. Randle would be a returning alumni furthering his coaching career. It is not uncommon for guys coming up early in their coaching career to jump around a bit to find what is best for them. Ivey on the other hand has a clear goal in mind of being HC at Texas. He would be trying to line himself up as the guy to replace Beard at some point in the future. We know he had interest in that job before they got Beard and Texas seems like one of those places that is going to take less chances on an unknown like Ivey. It makes a lot of sense for Ivey to take a high level AC job or a mid major HC job to prep himself for running the show at Texas
