Conference Realignment

If the B1G extends an invitation to Iowa State it is bowing out of the competition to be the number 1 conference in the country.
It’s that simple.
yea, if we invite Iowa st, we might as well invite South Dakota St - you would get about the same amount of dedicated fans.

Don't forget that this is about broadcast and streaming rights revenue. That's first, second, and third on the list. Then academic fit and other criteria enter the discussion. If you aren't adding large eyeballs you aren't getting in. If we can't use you to pry someone else loose you aren't getting in. Iowa St adds not one single eyeball, and they already play Iowa every year. They add nothing. WVU is in a sparsely populated state, won't add enough eyeballs to make the pie bigger and is essentially a 4 yr JUCO. I'd be shocked if either one was even considered let alone added. KU might get consideration due to BB status but only if adding them would help pry someone else loose (UNC, aTm).

The remaining big fish after UT and OU move would be UNC, UND, Clemson, and FSU, and certainly aTm if they are indeed in play. You don't add anybody else unless it gets you one the the big fish.
While adding a new market is much more valuable than adding a team within the footprint, that doesn’t mean it adds zero eyeballs. Each school has its alum base and ‘adopted’ fans.

Also, “adding a market” is not just about the team in question. In NYC (Rutgers) and DC (Maryland) there are scores of alums of other B1G schools and the conference is now able to bring sports to their doorstep and get them re-engaged with their schools.

I’m sure you all have anecdotes, as I do, of fellow Illini who live in those places who were maybe already finding ways to get BTN but the expansion was nevertheless a boon to them because now they have a much more painless way to catch an Illinois game in person.

Another round of conference expansion/realignment is going to require leadership that is quick on their feet. Not sure if Kevin Warren is that guy but I'm calling aTm today to see how they feel about this. Ticked off? Feel betrayed? We've got a spot for you in the B1G. All in all not likely but I'm calling them often. I'm also on the horn to UNC, Clemson and UVA to plant some more seeds for a few years down the road (UVA would be my last choice of these 3 as they don't move the needle much on FB). GOR issues will be at the forefront in any discussion with ACC schools but if enough money appears, or the threat of enough money disappearing down the road becomes a real consideration then anything becomes possible.

I would guess aTm gets over being cheated on and stays, so I'd move on to the ACC schools. Adding KU as a 15th member is meh for me as they do add a legit Blue Blood BB program but are a net loss in FB. Not to mention their athletic dept is a hot mess of dysfunction and virtually everybody associated with their BB program is a scumbag. I'll hold my nose and add them but only if I'm confident that it's a move that will bring in someone else down the road (UNC for example, one scumbag gets another).

I think pretty much every ACC program will be in play sooner rather than later so Mr Warren needs to be proactive to say the least.
Starting around 11:25 the interviewee makes some interesting comments about Kevin Warren, OSU, Michigan, Barry Alvarez, and the B1G.

At this point, it’s all about maximum national exposure and getting the best programs you can into your conference.

If the Big Ten is doing diligence, it is furiously making the best deals it can right now. It will pick off the best programs it can wherever they are found. The old conference idea of shared geography might be going out the window. Get Miami? Get North Carolina? Maybe even a Kentucky who doesn’t want to try to compete in the ‘new’ SEC? Get the most high-profile programs you can because we may end up with some form of Nationwide College Super Leagues like the two leagues in MLB.

If The Ten can get a North Carolina or Miami... Iowa State is out. If they can get a Kentucky... West Virginia is out. Fill out your League dance card with the best you can get because if you don’t someone else is going to grab ‘em and fast.

The Big Ten (as an entire league) has taken a back seat to the SEC (in the National eye) in football for a long time now. The Ten sees encroachments into their roundball world from these same SEC football powers. Do the other conferences want to sit by and watch the SEC fully take over the top level of College Sports?

What happens in the next few days will set the landscape of College Sports for a generation.

I find it almost impossible to believe that the University Presidents of UM or O$U would walkaway from the 100's of millions in research money that goes along with the BTAA for the fraction of that for football revenue in the SEC.

National/southern bloggers dont understand the deep ties that the B1G schools have to each other. Its not that way anywhere else. They talk from a position of ignorance.
Oh, I must be ignorant, too. Please enlighten me on what research funding is tied to their athletic conference affiliation that they would be walking away from.

You would think Texas would have joined the Big Ten years ago to get a slice of the pie. The academia there probably spend too much time reading southern bloggers.

I spend a lot of time in Texas.

The U of Texas may be in Austin but the spirit of Texas resides in College Station. Rabid fan base united in their hatred of all things Longhorn. Great traditions, would be a perfect fit.
20+ year Texan. It is horns state first - A&M is the little brother. Agree with all your other statements.

Over on Bucknuts someone said the B1G is looking into Georgia Tech and Miami. . .not a great geographic fit but would open up Georgia and Florida markets. But the dream is Notre Dame, which I still don't understand why they'd go ACC over the B1G but whatever at this point. I heard Virginia Tech is a possibility too.

Let's hope Warren is on the sidelines for this and he's having the professionals figure out what's next.

And you'd hope we'd do WHATEVER it takes to see if A&M would make the move.
Warren is still trying to figure out is it university of Illinois or Illinois University?

Whew, dreaming about the B1G adding UK and KU to become the SEC of basketball is kinda mind-blowing.

Saw a tweet from bucknuts where the B1G is in discussion with Oregon, Colorado, USC and UCLA - we should also go after Stanford and Washington.

There is also more and more smoke about Michigan and OSU seriously considering the SEC, along with FSU and Clemson.

That would be dumb on so many fronts. Clemson walks to the playoff right now. Unless the ACC dissolves no reason to leave. OSU is even more insane as the B1G has a ton of money and they are clearly a step above in football.

On realignment if the SEC does get UT the only legitimate counter for the B1G is ND but I doubt they get off their high horse and do what makes sense. A ND and DC area school would make a ton of sense for the B1G

If by more smoke you mean more clickbait, I'll agree.

On a somewhat different topic, I found out yesterday that a conference can get sued for contacting a school in another conference first. The school has to reach out to the conference first to express interest.

I hope our commissioner and leadership’s number one priority is keeping what we have together first and foremost

I'd be happy to lose Northwestern, Nebraska, and IU if we got UNC, GT, and ND in return. Those things are unlikely to happen though.

losing a B1G school is about 100 times more unlikely than getting a new one

as with the issue of initial contact, you can pretty much guess the league NEVER contacts first, however, there are always six degrees of seperation you can use to get some guy to contact some guy to then contact another guy who then contacts the school AD or President. all done in person, mouth to ear.

Just like how schools contact potential coaches who are currently employed by another school

so called "tampering" is done, but not "open and notorious" like and on the record.
