Yeah. That's about the size of it. I've lived in and around DC off and on for 25 years. UVa puzzles me. Its alums are inexplicably insufferable, apparently believing that the mere fact that Thomas Jefferson founded the university bestows elite status upon them. (They refer to the place --- I'm not kidding --- as "Mr. Jefferson's university.")

I'm curious about my fellow DC-area Loyalty posters' opinion of the place. Coincidentally, I'm taking my daughter (a high school senior) down there this Friday for her second visit. Perhaps I can see the Illini practicing during the afternoon. She loved VA Tech and Blacksburg.
I’ve experienced pretty much the same…people saying they went to UVA like it’s Harvard Law. Not all, there are, as you say, those who laugh at the pretentiousness of their own alma mater, but the smugness and disdain for other schools certainly does exist.

Best place for a 55 yr old alum to watch the game on campus this weekend? I would be happy to hang with the youth, if they don't mind an old fart.

UVA grads are like people who have lived in NYC, do crossfit, and/or are vegan - each will instinctively figure out the most direct route to "casually" mentioning the fact in conversation upon meeting someone new.

That their diplomas are the size of a standard sheet of posterboard isn't a coincidence.

I never knew until this morning that Hulu carries ACCN, so I guess I'll have the pleasure of watching this one. Here's hoping we learned enough lessons from UTSA to get our groove back defensively and on the o-line.

On to the next one, and can honestly say I know nothing about UVA football..
UVA is a legit team nowadays. Mendenhal, their coach, reminde me of what I am seeing in BB. He took over from a pretty deisasterous coach in '16 who absolutely could not rectuir in state, giving way the VT on the very good player while great players went out of state all together after Beamer retire at VT. The team lacked discipline and Mendenhall definitlely got them back to basics. They went 9-5 in '19, losing close games to Miami and Louisville and were competetive until the 4th quarter with ND. They got blown out in the ACC champioship game to Clemson, but that was to be expected. I'd like to see the Illini there 3 years into the BB era. The fifth loss was to I think Florida in the Orange Bowl.

Most of that team is back. Not a juggernaut, but a legit power 5 now. We can win this game, and I'll be there to cheer them - the Illini of course - on.

By the way, as a parent of three UVA alums, while i see the snubbery from some current and former Wahoos, there are a lot of grounded alum as well :) It is less of a tradition, but the gentelman students were wearing coats and ties to the games. Not sure how much of that is still happening, but don;t be surprised if you see that.

With all of that I am still going to predict an Illini victory in a fairly high scoring game. Illinois 33 - UVA 29

I'm trying to absorb some of the optimism in this thread. I'm picturing a 2+ TD defeat.

Goals.
Play consistent on both sides of ball.
Have confidence from the start.
Keep the game interesting.
Keep it within a score until the end of the game.

Ah the University of Virginia. The history. The architecture. The Vineyard Vines.

My freshman year, Jeff George and company beat them in the Citrus Bowl in a game that wasn't really as close as the 31 - 21 final margin.

Nine years later Kurt Kittner was the MVP in a 63 - 21 romp in the Micron PC Bowl. (Rocky Harvey ran for over 100, too.)

Those are the only two games I could find, and maybe the only two times they've met.

That said, I'd feel better if the game were in Florida.

If the defense can stop UVA on third down, we can win this. Big “if.”
This is huge. We have to dial things up and get off the field. I think having film on UVA will help. Coaches seemed to have the ability to adjust but having current film to make those adjustments might help us not "start slow"

We have to get our OL to compete. They got whipped by UTSA and anytime out team had the DL playing on our side of the ball we are going to lose. So I hope we get the the bull dozers warmed up and ready as they are the most important part of this team.

I think we mix it up here and surprise them. Come out throwing the ball - they’ll expect the opposite. If it works we get an early lead then start eating clock.

I agree with this. I noted a a defensive improvement after Witherspoon and Adams switched sides.

I took the plunge, not often I can see the team in person but an hour drive beats 12!

I know next to nothing about the Cavs except apparently a horse is their head coach….

Anyways, hoping for a win, I think that comes from an established run game early to open up the easy passes for Artur!

If you happen to be coming to the game, I hope to be well hydrated by game time so shout an ILL, you won’t miss me in the crowd of orange and blue Wahoos!

Side note: Found out a few days that our friend Rod Smith joined Virginia's staff as an analyst. I always wonder how much former coaches who know the roster of the opponent can impact a game.

I was going to trek down from New York to watch this game in person as I typically do whenever we play a game east of Columbus. But then I saw that start time. How does a person even tailgate for an 11am local kickoff? Bacon? Scones? Mimosas and avocado toast?
