While I am extremely pissed about this game, it doesn't really hurt my long vision for the team. It's very frustrating, but we shot 20 less free throws, had 26 turnovers, missing a key contributor off the bench and an AA NPOY candidate. We lost by 1 on what was probably the worst game I've watched in a long time, thanks to an uncalled kick that led to a game winning layup.

Can anyone tell me why Marquette wasn't fouling at the end? There was like 1.5sec difference between shot clock and game clock? If we hold for 28 and shoot a long 3, it's over.

I'm guessing the guy was gonna go for a steal, expecting to foul and it didn't get called, nor did the kick.

Bo Boroski and Larry Scirotto are the two worst refs in college ball and we always seem to get them.

They didn't foul because we did exactly what we did at the end and gave them the game.

That game was just so inconsistently called both ways. Call the delay on us for touching the ball then not calling it at the other end. Just so confusing on so many calls.

Our offensive possessions after the Hawkins 3 with 10:14 remaining to go up 12:
Hawkins TO
Curbelo missed fade away
Curbelo missed layup, which he rebounded and missed again
Plummer TO
Grandison TO (Charge)
Curbelo missed jumper
Frazier made 3 (61-55)
Curbelo makes 2 FTs after getting bailed out on a bad jumper (63-55)
Damonte missed jumper followed by Hawkins slam (65-57)

Curbelo missed layup
Curbelo missed layup
Curbelo missed layup
Curbelo TO and foul
Curbelo makes 1 of 2 from the line (66-62, 3:04 remaining)
Curbelo missed 3, rebounded by Damonte, missed jumper by Frazier
Grandison missed 3 pointer
Frazier missed 3 pointer
Curbelo missed jumper
Frazier TO (kick ball that wasn't)
Curbelo TO to end it.

By my count, 12 of our final 20 possessions ended in Curbelo's hands with only 3 points to show for it. 2 of those came from FTs on a questionable shot that he was bailed out on by the foul call and the other FT he hit was when he nearly turned it over and fell on the Marquette player. I don't mean to blame Curbelo as I think BU and staff should have reined in the hero ball.

I'm going to echo others on let's not overreact. Remember, our Illini that managed to get a 1 seed in last year's tournament lost to a less than impressive Mizzou team in a game in which we had Ayo AND Kofi on the court.
Great rundown....

This is still a potential final four team. One game doesn't change that. A thought-Let's not tear Andre down. He's an amazing player who had a terrible terrible game. It's one loss and everything is still in front of us this season. Andre works his !!! off and was just off all night. I promise you we will be a different team next week, especially with a certain big man back
Of course it is. As much as people want us to beat every team on our schedule before conference play it was hard to see that happening because I still view this team as very inexperienced right now. I know Frazier, Belo, and DMW have the experience but most of these guys in our rotation that played tonight didn't play in key games last year. This team will take some time to get into a rhythm and once they do we will be very similar to last year.

I had a feeling this would be a tough game. On the road against a major conference team early in the season. It would have been great to win obviously but I'm not going to be down on this team right now. It's too early. Our record was 5-3 and 9-5 last season. By time conference season starts up we will be very good again.

What worries me the most isn’t Curbelo’s performance, it’s the fact he didn’t have the IQ and feel to realize he needed to stop trying to force it. With Ayo gone as our closer, we need Belo to make the right play, especially when he is having a terrible game.
Sometimes when you are running hot the blinders go on and it’s all about the “get back” shot or play to right the ship.

Not that I’ve been there…

One major thing that's going to help this team and Curbelo is having the Kofi pick and roll back in the offense. Its probably going to help settle things down in a big way

Even more concerning to me is the entire coaching staff sat and watched it happen and did absolutely nothing to help put the team in better position to close the game out. Yikes.

Wow, that sounds like fun.

Hate to jump to conclusions, but I’m guessing the Venn diagram of people who are coming out of the woodwork to hang adjectives on Curbelo like emotional, hot-headed, selfish, and cocky and people who would die of auto-erotic asphyxiation if Ty Pence signed with us is more or less a single overlapping circle.

Belo deserves criticism, not gonna argue that. But I’m hearing exactly what I thought I’d hear when he cost us a game.
BU deserves some criticism for allowing him to play out of control.

Why do I get the feeling BU is now smiling with that evil coaches smile knowing how he gets to run practices now?

"Oh, you think you're a top 10 team with an AA point guard? Ok."

*looks at team manager* "We're gonna need extra puke buckets today."

I’m not for sure how Brad was supposed to get Curbelo reined in? Who else do we have that can handle the ball? You want Trent ideally off the ball to catch and shoot. Plummer had shown you nothing. We had 2 timeouts taken by players trying to cover up their miscues. I thought BU was saving the last TO for the last possession but he inexplicably never called it. I agree with all of you Curbelo was awful and contributed the most to lose the game but practically every player in the floor did something stupid/horrible at the end to contribute to that loss. As Brad always states we got punched in the mouth and never really recovered. BU and Chester will have lots of film to work with. Hopefully they can get Curbelo to start making the smart plays again.

I can't believe people are saying you can't blame BU or Belo for that loss. There are others who deserve some credit too, heck almost anyone that played had a hand in that loss. The stubbornness to take Belo off the ball late was the last nail in the coffin.

As a coach you have to realize when a guy doesn't haven't in a given game and that was about as obvious as it gets. If Belo can't play off ball more then you have to replace him. Maybe you still lose but putting Belo in that situation is a recipe for success.

I've entered the fifth stage of grief and have now accepted this loss.

Curbelo will learn that leaders don't always lead by doing, that's not his game. His game is letting others shine with his creativity and vision. This creates more opportunities for him to get his because it stresses the defense away from him.

Lots of learning moments for him this season. Looking forward to his growth.

He played awful. We could just leave it at that.
Or, we could go into hyperbolic fits of verbal vomit just to feel better.
Franknitty30,
I liked this quote:..."hyperbolic fits of verbal vomit"

I'm pretty sure I had a previous boss that suffered from that alot...

I've never seen a starter caliber player sabotage his team's chance at victory more than Curbelo has tonight.
I have been in the minority this year, but I have always said that Curbelo is the most overrated player in Illinois history. Give Williams and Plummer more minutes.

Yes I'm piling on, definitely more for my psychological benefit than anything.

I honestly cannot think of a worse individual basketball performance than Curbelo's tonight. Not just the line, but the CONTINUANCE of it, even the ACCELERATION of it's terrible-ness through the final buzzer. I was slack-jawed throughout.

You've got to wonder what in the world he was thinking. I know competitors think "next play" right? But these weren't just bad plays, they were "I can do anything I choose to do" plays, with terrible dribble-through decisions, awful shot selection, etc being repeated over and over and over. Kid had no feedback loop at all. Nearly unbelievable.
I'd expect there to be serious discord about his performance in the locker room and in practices this coming week. Underwood has a problem, and I hope he attacks it quickly and directly (like "NBA kid? Really?")

Yikes. But that all said, I like the kid and we need him to play much smarter basketball to have the kind of season we all want this year.

Seemed like Brad was trying to teach the team to fight through things and figure it out on the floor. Also seemed though like he didn’t want to lose so he didn’t play the freshman. That what’s so perplexing about the coaching in the last 5 minutes of the game. If you’re playing to win you need to coach like it down the stretch. It one game and hopefully they learn from it. Just very frustrating…Ayo ain’t walking through the door to bail the end of a game out.
BU is going to use this game as bludgeoned lever for the team...and to everyone on this board....Ayo is in the league now.....comparing him to this team will be tedious going forward...and no help to anyone. Not directed to you.

Anyone else want to vent re Curbelo tonight.
Good gracious…we all saw it.
Now have an actual take that requires thought and not emotion.
On a side note, it wasn’t a kick…..read the rule. I order to call a kick it must be intentional.
Trent spun when he dribbled and it inadvertently was run through by the defender.

I am in shock at his lack of bball IQ. He was so determined to right the ship and refused to pass the ball. It’s mind boggling he couldn’t realize he just needed to make the simple play.
Exactly my take Illiniguy. Curbelo will be burned at the stake by most posters tonight. My take?
1. What a great learning experience...every mistake that could be made..was.
2. Maybe AC can clear his head and maybe the coaches can then teach him how to play the game smart.
3. Maybe the team as a whole was so embarrassed and become determined to do all possible to never let it happen again.

What the predictor was for me was to see the team get 10 pt. leads or more in both halves and then relax and start making blunders. When AC got he ball on the last two possessions, I was almost certain what the outcome would be. Classic example of repeating mistakes over and over. Can he learn? Can the staff make certain of that?
