Illinois 87, Iowa 83 Postgame

I have yet seen us press this year. It is something we need to do and will need to do at some point. Hopefully it is in our arsenal.

Is it just me or does it seem Kofi gets fouled at least 90% of the time he has the ball but it’s called like 10% of the time?
THAT is what I saw! I pause and rewind A LOT (make it up during commercials). Kofi gets hammered most times down the court

To me, JUST CALL THE GAME CONSISTENTLY!

I don’t care if you call it loose or tight, but call it the same on both ends.

Positives:
1. +29 rebound edge Illini.
2. Granderson and Plummer.
3. Granderson and Plummer. 50% of our points! Wow.
4. Great Free throw shooting, can't remember a illini team shooting that many free throws at 89%.
5. T FRAZIER, starting to look healthy.
6. Kofi, letting game come to him and insane Stat stuffed sheet. NPOY!
7. CoHawk, doing great things/ defense!

Negative:
1. CoHwk give up on the 3pt. shot this year, 25% so far. Find your lane and dominate in it.
2. Get Omar Payne going if possible, gonna be so important if we can.
3. Turnovers, Uh!
4. Break press and go straight to rim with a trailer. Don't back off into half court offense.
5. 5- 10 second violations bringing ball pass half court, that's middle school BALL! No sense in that at all!!!!!!!!

Awesome win on their court! Get healthier and sharper. Zona is legit. Great job Illini MB team.

Good win any way you slice it. A couple of things…. I don’t recall an Illinois team (as a whole) I had more confidence in shooting free throws and I really like the toughness of this team. I have nothing against the 2 previous coaches, but the culture of toughness under Underwood is a difference maker.

Go Nats 88 Illini

Fairfax, VA
For those of you who know basketball. Why did Iowa seem to be able to get open looks all first half? They missed enough, but seemed to move it around for open threes and others. They missed enough which helped. We hit a lot of great threes but nearly everything was contested especially early. Must have been an adjustment but I can't figure it out. Seems we had luck with how poorly they shot early but we seemed to give them too many opportunities. In the second half, we were all over them and they had few uncontested shots. We got a lot of fouls early in the 2nd that I thought might bite us, but did not. Just learning.

So did they win a close game by shooting 44% from 3, 86% from the line, and board win of 52 to 23....or did they almost blow it with by getting embarrassed 18-4 in turnovers. Extreme in all four areas...but this game should not have been close.

Yet you have to like so many good things, especially the srs. getting it done after Hawk fouled out. Plummer was not used much in the second half....until needed....but he has to get touches with the game on the line. My solution, as I stated on the game thread, would be to hand out a question for all players to answer. Who do you get the ball to in the last 4 min. of a close game? Anyone who does not write AP loses his scholarship.

Yet, tonight was another head-shaker resulting in a W and we will all take it. Kofi and others continued to look to the arc when in a scrum and it payed off. Got to continue. Kofi was an offensive dervish and hit his freebies at 86%. But trying to clean the ball off with his shoelaces after a catch has got to go. Nevertheless, I would sure rather play on his side than against him.

Good game to win and from which to learn. Must spend more time on EXACTLY what to do against a press....every man. Ball has to move quicker and stopping it plays into the pressing team's hands. Not sure Curbelo will help since it is not difficult to learn or execute. This team should want opposition to press and make them pay for it. Too much talent and experience, but the blunders and indecision have to be erased.

Finally, for me personally, the next game is a nightmare....but I always love to see the Illini hoopsters beat my Cats...never doubt that.

I feel Hawk will play better. I need to remember he really has only played in a handful of true road games against a hostile crowd like tonight. He and others will continue to mature and learn from tough road games like tonight. Its easier to deal with when we get the W. Great learning opportunity!
I thought Hawk played great. 7 boards, 5 assists, and 7 points. He played great defense on KM too! Notice the run he went on after Hawk fouled out….

7 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and played great
D on Murray. It’s no coincidence Murray got going after Hawk got in foul trouble.

Too many TOs and fouls I will grant you. But feel like he got a little unlucky on a couple of touch fouls. I think he will continue to improve as the season goes on and really learning how to bother people with his length on defense.

EDIT: @Longtime lurker beat me to it.

Never easy on the road in the B1G. Both teams played their best when the other let up on the gas. Refs kept it interesting, but stayed out of the way for the most part.
The boys showed some character. They fought through some adversity (turnovers) and stuck with the game plan (feed the B1G one). Good things happened.
Let’s get a signature win at home this weekend!

Hard to believe two 10 second calls in a row
There were three 10 second violations called against Illinois tonight....I'm gonna guess we won't see three 10 second violations called the rest of the B10 season....TOTAL
