It was also stated flat out the Miller situation played a big role in the staff cooling on Fears.
This is almost certainly not true. The Miller situation has been played out for decades and it was no revelation to BU. Maybe he gave it as example to someone but I certainly doubt his approach altered because of it

Promises or assurances to players might look different at different times depending on the strength of the program.

The corollary to "I want to start." is "Stop recruiting guys like Boswell ahead of me in the rankings.". I'm totally fine saying no to that.

Like Brunson and Evans we're likely never to really know.

Feel free to review 0440's posts where he states it.

Or don't review. But he posted it.

It’s really just hard to wrap your head around a non committable offer to a top 30 player. Equal parts exciting and terrifying.
I rationalize it as like a great looking piece of clothing from a major top 30 designer , but it just doesn't fit me properly and a less recognizable designer , say top 50-60 , fits me better and will last longer with less demands on me wearing it starting day one................JMHO

Not to say that the staff doesn't accept his commitment down the road but for right now he's on slow play and UI is not the only one in that category (MSU , UM, and Kansas too). IU passed on him (According to Rabjohns) and they need a PG desperately. The knock on him is he can't shoot and his size is a disadvantage. Finally, he will not end up in the "top 30", he will likely fall into the 65-75 range. He did not have a very good World Games this summer and his AAU season (Bradley Beal Elite) did not help him. Finally, it is clear that Boswell is the target. Trust this staff, they are very very good at talent evaluation and fit. I can't say enough on shooters/shooters/shooters!!
Go Illini......

Miller's parents wanted Miller to start. Miller started all 31 games. Still transferred.

Fears' parents reportedly want him guaranteed a starting role. If so, do you still take him?

I don't
Mommy, not parents, correct? Dad stood behind BU and Company was my understanding and wanted him to uphold his committment

Who is rating these players? Those with a lifetime of coaching experience, or a lifetime of watching experience? Not a single HS, college, or professional coach has anything to do with ratings. I'd be willing to bet that a little mo ey from camp to camp is thrown around to increase rating as well.

I trust in the trained eye of real coaches, who have the full knowledge of everything we don't have, which is A LOT!

If he doesn't fit, we must quit

I think a lot of the raters are also relying on what they get from coaches. But opinions can change for a whole lot of reasons.

With Fears, there are lots of offers out there from top schools which would seem to justify the high ratings.

Or because of the high ratings he has a lot of interest….

You may be correct but since I wasn't clear on whether one (Mom) or both parents were driving the Transfer Train, I kept my post nonspecific.
