I buy that highly rated players get more attention because of their rating. I don't buy that they're going to have more offers if those ratings are bad and don't match up with a positive internal evaluation. To go back to the original context, Fears is obviously a very talented player. Even if he's a bit overrated, he's still likely at least a top 100 player. Now, that doesn't mean he fits a given team (such as ours) and that doesn't mean he's a lock to be good in college, but there's something there that caught and sustained the attention of both scouting services AND coaching staffs.

Sometimes you see a recruit who is top 100 but whose offer sheet looks more like a 3-star. Sometimes you see a recruit rated in the 150-200 range but with some major programs offering. Those are indications that scouting services and coaching staff evaluations are not always aligned.
Well said and agree.

Great coaches understand roster and are continually putting the puzzle together. Great to have 5* at multiple positions but most good teams need older players and glue guys.

Always said Chester would have been a good 10-15 minute player during 2004-2006 but was forced into major minutes because Weber couldn’t build an entire roster.

05-06 was his freshman year and he averaged 13.4 min. Assume you are referring more to the 06-09 seasons where he was the starting PG. He was a better player than many remember. His Achilles was his 3 pt shot, which was much improved his senior year. Was on the B10 all defensive team several times, among the top of the league in assists and a/to ratio, and was one of the best rebounding pg’s I can remember. He would be much better remembered if he hadn’t followed Dee imo.

Caught an Illini classic on BTN last night.....The Illini against the tarholes from 11/29/05 , the B1G - ACC challenge game the season following the championship game from early 2005.........

Chester , Dee , James A. , Jamar Smith , Warren C. , Rich Mcbride , etc ......Had Schulman and Vitale slob-knobbing over the tarholes as the Illini won 68-64...

Chester was a terror on D. ....................good vibes

Correct regarding his later years. Trying to say Chester would have had a more successful career (regarding team success) if he was paired with better players. He was asked or expected to do more.
Kinda Of like dmw on recent teams

Does Chester give the ole Eric Gordon chest bump to McBride in the hand shake line tonight?

Why he is originally from the Champaign area and only recently (last 2 to 3 years I think) relocated to the west coast

And there is lots of extended family still in Champaign. In an ideal world they would love to come back but they will go where they think is best for his career. My feelings if two places are equal the draw of coming home could be the winner.

With the success of this year's team and shooting, I think we are seeing why the delay on accepting recruit commitments from non shooters. Ty Rodgers is a non shooter but he does a whole lot more than that.
I'd be willing to bet that Ty will be a "shooter" by the time he leaves Illinois. He looks to be really advanced in the other aspects of the game. (good handle, vision, footwork) A semi-reliable outside shot might be the only thing keeping him from being a 1st round pick in a couple years. (Especially after he is fully "Fletched") If he works like they say, he's probably getting shots up right now...

Not going to be easy replacing shooters like Alph, Trent and Jacob (assuming he leaves). RJ, Luke, and Podz good but replacing the seniors is a high bar.

Which is exactly why Thomas would be a great get, IMO. Hearing mixed messages there: some say he's a priority (if not an automatic take), others say not so much. We have a lot of good, young wings, but we could use another, if that kid is a couple of inches taller (at least) version of Schutt.

Draymond Green doesn’t shoot

(Not disagreeing. Reaffirming)

Wouldn’t people have said the same thing about DMW? Not saying you’re wrong, but a coach doesn’t suddenly make a non-shooter a shooter. A 55% 3PT percentage didn’t bring DMW anywhere close to the NBA draft. Just giving some perspective.
