To be fair, it's hard to project how a player would have developed in a different system with different coaches. Maybe Ayo goes to Wake Forest instead and doesn't end up in the NBA (or ends up there a year sooner). Maybe Ramey comes here and ends up killing it. Maybe Jawun Evans chooses Illinois and Groce is still our co... sorry, that was uncalled for.

HS defense << College defense. Offense translates easier from level to level than defensive schemes
Oh I get that. I just would have thought that the guy who was considered a better defensive recruit would have a step ahead than the others

Belo is a starter he's just not healthy and Coleman is going to be a stud next year. Grandison and Kofi could very possibly be back next year. There also may be an upgrade or two thanks to the portal:censored::cool:.......
I'm just curious what makes anyone think at this point that Coleman will be a stud? I think he has all the talent in the world but it does not seem to translate in games. I hope I am wrong and he turns into a superstar.

I mean, he's only a sophomore. He has some real stinky moments out there, but also shows flashes of absolute dominance. Ultimately, it seems like it's largely up to him what kind of player he's going to be, but it's far too early to write him off.

He has everything you look for in a modern NBA 4. He just needs experience, confidence, and maybe a little more creativity with the ball in his hands. He can beat his man in so many different ways but it's almost like he just doesn't have a good feel yet for what the right move is. I think he'll get there next year.

He also needs to learn to play defense without relying on his hands and reaching in so much, and thus picking up stupid fouls. That and the bad passes.

I had a major man crush on Courtney Ramey. I really, really wanted him (sounds gross, I know). He's a senior at UT. Good player, but nowhere close to what I expected. Not a good shooter (better this year, but still). Thinking Fears' college career will be similar. FWLIW, I'm good with staff's decision.

While perusing Ramey's stats, checked out Tre Mitchell's stats too. Not having nearly the impact I expected. Impossible to know if it would be different here, but we may have actually dodged a bullet (Hawk transferring out).
Check out Dawson Garcia. One monster game in a loss to Purdue and a couple of decent games against Furman and Elon. Otherwise, meh. Only 2 ticks in the last game against BC.

Edit: I see he sustained a head injury, which would explain his low usage recently.

Tre's numbers on a per minute or per possession basis honestly look very similar to what they were last season at UMass. He's just playing fewer minutes, but his efficiency isn't any worse, even as the level of competition is likely higher. Still think he would have been a great pickup for us (though not at the cost of a wasted assistant coaching position)

Tre was rumored to be packaged deal with Tony Bergeron U Mass assistant coach who coached him in HS.

However Bergeron did not get a job at Texas. So the package was not real. Tre just chose TX over IL

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Belo fan, but I'm very concerned about him being "the guy" at PG. Last year things worked well because he was the knuckle ball off the bench and we really didn't need to rely on his shooting. This year things are much different, and while we obviously have seen minimal action from him, I think it's reasonable to believe that team's would have been much better prepared for him this year and that we will need more shooting from him. We have also been spoiled with generational talent Kofi Cockburn who cannot be replaced and he has single handily elevated our game and hid many of our blemishes. I guess what I'm getting at is that we will need a lot from Andre Curbelo this year and beyond and I'm concerned about him being able to shoulder that weight. Hope this post comes back to bite me later.

Not sure about a Stud, but I feel his play is exactly what we need. He rebounds well and does well with put backs. I think he needs to work on his outside shot, get out of being the one that gets on coaches nerves the most (so he can stay on the floor), learn to not get the senseless foul which I feel you learn from on the job training which he’s getting, and concentrate on his passing. Personally I think he is heading in the right direction and feel he’s going to be a real good player for us.

All this and the realization that he didn't really grow until his junior year of HS, correct. If memory serves he played the point for a long time, so he is still learning how to play a different position.

Love his upside still and always will even if he leaves in 4 years and still comes off the bench.

He wants to win, just learning how to win with what he has in comparison of others on his team.

To build on this, his usage tries to capitalize on his versatility but that can also be a bit of a curse because of all the options and roles to keep track of. Harder to be a quick decision-maker. I feel like it’s starting to click and he’ll be the key for 3-5 more of our wins this season.

I hadn't heard this. But it makes perfect sense. When I was typing my last post about him, I was literally thinking that he plays like someone who had a late growth spurt but wasn't sure if that was true. Reminds me of a super hero origin story where he's still learning what he's capable of and how to wield his powers.

Exactly... CoHawk has the tools but needs to applied better at times. He plays a lot better when he just reacts. He thinks way to much time when trying to feed Koch and Telegraph his passes. On the other hand he can beat most anyone guarding him off the dribble but you hardly ever see Kofi clear out of the lane to give home a path to the basket..

Stud means different things to different people. If you look at his stat line from fr to soph year, he's come a long way. Roughly 8 & 6 in 21 minutes. He's also getting a steal a game. It's also a commonly held view that bigs take longer to develop, often making the biggest jump as juniors. I'm pretty happy with where he's at. Not sure if he'll be an all conference player before he leaves, but I think he's going to get a lot better as an upper classman.

I read the chatter regarding Belo and the fallacy that he can’t shoot. I’m so tired of seeing that.
We can all agree, I believe, that he wasn’t himself in most of the games he played thus far this year due to injury.
I believe the consensus is that he concussed in pre-season and played without accurately being diagnosed with post-concussion symptoms that have kept him out for two months now. Obviously, the severity of the injury was much more complex or severe than originally diagnosed. Likely, we can all agree on that.
So we really have just his freshman year to judge or asses his shooting ability.
I would suggest that most people that present the opinion that he is not a shooter, do not realize his shooting percentage as a freshman was .498 (109/219). That includes his poor 3 point shooting of .161 (5/31)
All indications are that he dramatically improved his 3 point shooting in the freshman to sophomore jump.
Unfortunately, due to the injury, we don’t quite know that.
But shooting 50% overall as a freshman most certainly doesn’t lead me down the path of “he can’t shoot”.
I will take Belo and his freshman skills and shooting for the next 2 or 3 years all day, every day.
Let the development of his three point shot come as it will.
But enough already that he can’t shoot.
