Illinois 73, Northwestern 66 Postgame

Frankly, a disgusting win. 1 for 13 from three point range in 2H with turnovers galore. The drumbeat continues--the trajectory of the offense, individually player driven, is not coming along and not progressing as a whole. We aren't going to make any noise at all come tourney time.

I agree with the criticism, but we have to clean it up. What gets me is that we don't do the old school things ... drive the lane, get to the foul line, milk FT's in the bonus, play possession Bball.

Maybe. I feel like this was poor decisions on urgency trying to get back up from a blowout. But... this team is way too good to not nip runs like that much quicker. One three doesn't demoralize or could for as much as back-to-back layups or fouls. Shot fake and go to town.

The selfishness under duress is something to keep an eye on, for sure.

What's up with Hawkins?

He played with some energy (one dumb foul) but it looked like coach told him he wasn't allowed to shoot.
I really feel for him. Tons and tons of talent. Seems like he’s afraid to make a mistake and is hesitant, which is a killer. I like that he’s getting time with Payne on subs.

Still, he shows flashes and could be a huge part of this team next year. I hope he’s not disgruntled to the point of moving on next year. He could be so, so good.

I agree he shouldn't shoot unless it's a layup. He really bails guys out with dumb fouls after decent defense. I like his length, and we need whatever rebounding he can give us.

I think a lot of credit must go to the kitties D. They were overplaying the screens HARD in the second half against our weave action and we didn’t properly counter, which set the tone for a terrible last 10 minutes.

Unfortunately we will likely see a lot of that moving forward and need to properly implement some counters on O.

It really seems like he needs a reset button as big as an offseason. I don't see him having (or getting an opportunity for) a big coming out party this season. Who knows, because he has the talent, but a huge contribution from him be a defensive lockdown against Maryland more than a scoring outburst against anyone. It'll be hard to tell when he's arrived or happy.

Its reality
No, it's your emotional opinion after witnessing a poor 2nd half against a gritty team THAT WE BEAT (because our domination in the 1st half more than offset the poor play of the 2nd). We just whooped Wisconsin and Indiana and are alone in 1st place in the B10.

We have no idea how we'll perform in the tournament, and we proved last year that end of season momentum does not equate to tournament success. Let's all enjoy the ride and not try to extrapolate the worst of the team's flaws into the rest of the season.

I’m not sure which is stranger:

1. Since Maryland game, Plummer is only 13 of 19 from the line (68.4%)
2. Though I have no actual numbers to back it up, Trent has to be averaging about 1.5 air balls a game since the first NW game. Very strange for such a good shooter.

Ugly game with too many lazy turnovers. Great to see RJ get the time and really be productive with it. Also nice to see Hawk get more time today. I’m not as high on him as many are, but still believe he can be a good and important part of this team. Don’t think he scored (not even sure if he took a shot), but he had multiple rebounds and assists, and I believe a steal too.
lol, they might have to start making a stat for air balls. Not just Trent.

It’s not that. One time he passed up two open threes. We got a shot clock violation. Camera panned to Brad. He was yelling to shoot the ball. With more colorful words. Lol

We need more length at the 3. rlRJ provides that. Hawkins has not taken the steps I'd hoped. If he doesn't Goode should play. I'm hoping more tick for RJ and Belo going forward. Belo is a tough guard. I do understand why it's tough to play 3 guys together under 6. 2

Fans like that would have been much happier if we had lost the game.

Apparently the program has come a long way if we are able to complain about a B1G win. Not that long ago we were playing on Wednesday in the BTT.
Did I hear right in the broadcast we lost both matchups to NU in BUs first season?

We’ve won every game since but yeesh, talk about bottoming out as a program. We’ve come a long way since

He had a bad game with TO's. I'm sure BU will talk to him about not trying to make the fancy play or split the defense so much.
It looked to me like he got fouled on his first 2 unless they considered it a shot when he lost the ball going at the basket. Either way they missed it. Hawkins also clearly got hacked on one of his. Kofi also got raked across the arms on a couple of his. We still got sloppy with our passes and taking care of the ball but 4 or 5 of our turnovers should have been NW fouls.

It's funny, in life, when you see negativity expressed no matter what the situation or outcome is.

Some people will never be happy or satisfied. There is plenty to dissect and digest from this game....but that is all part of becoming a better player, and a better team.

Adversity. Failure. Mistakes. Every champion has been through all of it. This program, and specifically this team..this year...has seen a metric crap ton of it.
Back to practice guys, every day.
