Yes, I did enjoy that second half; thanks for asking.

Seeing RJ come into his own, contributing in crunch time was awesome! Seeing our kids grind out a WIN despite shaky ball control - enjoyed that, too!

Sweating whether they will or won’t win a natty while the team is highly ranked and is in SOLE POSSESSION OF FIRST PLACE late in the season in the best conference in the country… well, I got nothin’ for ya.
Best conference in the country? Have you watched the big 12 much? They got some teams.

In that regard, other than Busch Stadium and Wrigley Field, how many other MLB stadiums can you name? Yeah, me neither.
Even casual fans and non-fans are familiar with several such as Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium, but the best corporate bought-and-paid-for name has to be The Great American Ballpark

Great to get a win. However play like this in big ten tourney and more importantly the ncaa tourney and its an early ticket home. How an experienced and battle tested group can commit so many turnovers and look silly doing it is perplexing. Got to clean it up as tourneys are closing in.

If I have one consistent criticism of BU it’s waiting way too long to call a timeout to stop a big run. Especially since we seem to give one up almost every game
Same here. I think he's a great coach, but it makes so much sense to call a TO when the other team is on a run. I don't get why he doesn't do it.

It is not complaining or being negative when anyone said we played poor in the second half. We did, we need to do better. Hats off to NW they out played us. RJ had his best game, the kind of game many people on here have been saying he would have someday. Tip of the cap to all of those fans who have supported him, well me too. I don't mind the passion and some constructive criticism, lets all do better with it. I will also going forward.

We are in first place.

No surprise how we lost to Loyola, NU tried many of the same things. Double/triple team Kofi and make him pass for a low percentage 3.

Also pressure the ball high and deny passes, which led to many steals.

We needed for Kofi to find the open player quickly. Open player needs to make the 3. Grandy was effective in pasding over defense for hi-lo feed to Kofi. Also not having Andre to dribble past the top of the key defense hurt.

Also need for players to cut towards the lane when Kofi is trapped. Dont make him pass across court wgen hus vack is to you.

We have had 5 years of guys telling me williams doesn’t have to score to help the team. I thought hawkins was pretty good today.
But next year when he finds himself in the lane alone with the ball, he slams it home

RJ's game very similiar to Quentin Richardson. Both seem to get their hands on rebounds. Inside and outside game mixed in with athleticism. I think RJ will be a breakout player next season. Goode and Podz will be solid as well, all 3 have high bball IQ.

Tiger Stadium, Crosley Field, Forbes Field, Shibe Park, Sportsman's Park, Municipal Stadium, County Stadium, Ebbett's Field, .... Oh, did you mean current ballparks?

This! So many turnovers against a mediocre defensive team are inexcusable. Our long stretches without scoring will haunt us in the tournament unless we can develop a more dynamic offense. If Curbelo wasn't such a turnover machine and Brad played RJ and even the other freshmen more we'd be better on offense- Podz subbing 10 minutes/game for Plummer or DMW, Goode and RJ subbing for Grandison. I don't see Hawkins giving us anything other than a few tip-ins and occasional good defensive sequence all year. Too many of our post feeds to Kofi are so telegraphed he's already swarmed before he even gets the ball and he really had trouble getting into his often awkward "gather" to shoot the ball if getting it more than 5 feet from the basket. An occasional pass fake after receiving it in the post and some actual quick passes to a perimeter shooter in the process of collapsing down or digging the ball from him would be nice and take give him more space to maneuver for his shot. We have to play much better to beat Rutgers at their place. Would like to see take more TO's to break up runs by the opposing team before it hits double digits.
I think they are looking for their high speed flow and they will find it. It is just too bad to have had all the interruptions or this process would have been done.

Too many here are concerned that we get too many points on threes. Welcome to 2022! It is no longer a game that revolves around layups and free throws. Not saying that those things are not good things but, we need to take advantage of our strengths, also.

This thread has the same type of mood as after a loss....

Haven't watched BU's presser but it seemed like NW did a really good job of taking Illinois out of their offense. They threw a lot of junk at Kofi and were really focusing on blowing up the pick and roll actions that we normally thrive on.

It did seem like once they got frustrated on offense the effort started to go. Damonte seemed not in the game mentally after he missed some shots which is really unusual for him.

Still they got stops when they needed to (probably helped by Collins keeping Nance on the bench and then taking out Berry for Audige after Berry had been lighting it up) and definitely did a lot better on the boards than their last couple games.

Oh, I agree. But when they’re going down at a good clip we have to realize that may not happen the entire game. The good with the bad, or some such thing. 👍

There was lots of standing around watching and not moving to help. The trap he got into in the corner by the bench stood out to me. He was clearly stuck and no one really did anything to help get the ball out of the corner, he’s just taller than everybody that was guarding him so he was able to clear it.

It is possible to both be happy about the current state of the program and concerned about various weaknesses and vulnerabilities displayed by our team the past two seasons. Yes, we currently sit atop the B10 standings, but by my calculation we still have 6 games remaining this year and none of those are gimmes.

I watched the 89 team fall against Michigan. I personally witnessed the 2005 team have a national championship taken from them by the NCAA refs as well as letting North Carolina field a team who basically was not required to attend class while participating in a full NCAA basketball season.

We are continually on lists of "the best teams to not have won a national championship in the modern era." We have a top 15 all time winning percentage in the NCAA, yet have one of the lower levels of respect nationally as a result of "not being able to win the big one."

No one is saying our team sucks. Quite the contrary; we are a top 15 no doubt and can beat anyone when playing well. But we are in the second season with a once in a generation - type player. While I undoubtedly enjoy Big Ten wins and would much rather be where we are rather than where we were the past 15 seasons or so, I am hopeful to witness us win it all at least once in my lifetime. I enjoy watching regardless, but that would put a stamp on our program as truly one of the elites. Not sorry for wanting that for a great fan base and university, alumni, etc. that I love!
I’d love an Illini national championship as much as you. And hopefully it happens within both of our lifetimes. But I just looked it up, and it looks like only 25 schools have won a NC in my lifetime, so the fraternity is relatively small in that timeframe. Though I will admit the recent VA and Baylor NCs happening before Illinois getting one hurt.

As to the once in a generation comment, when was the last time a national championship team was led by a center? Illini certainly have weaknesses, if they’re hitting on all cylinders, they are a NC contender. If not, they can get bounced by probably a dozen teams, and even more than that if that other team is hitting on all cylinders. All that said, like you I’m loving where the program is right now. I don’t know if the Illini can go all the way this year, but will be fun finding out. And heck, if the other team I root for can make Elite Eight last year, Illini can win it all this year.

Go Illini.

Probably the best press conference and insight on our players that coach has given this year. Saddened not having Andre this whole season and watching the game slow down for him and him. RJ Melendez he looks so comfortable out there. He's starting to end up in the right spot of the court on offense and especially defense!!! Coleman Hawkins still lost. in the first half I saw him literally looking for someone to guard and running after three people towards the end of the first half. I hope it slows down for him and he stays patient and stays with the University of Illinois. he's going to be a beast. great press conference by coach let's go ahead and finish this season as the Big Ten Champs.💯
Coleman is not that far off, unsure of himself seems like. That will wear off and like you I hope he's in school here when it does it
