Honestly, I'm good with us not beating fans of other teams when they visit. Soccer hooliganism has never been a good look.
I wish I had a reason why. Fear of a lengthy prison sentence, perhaps?
Edit: maybe a sense of pride in being able to drown them out with our own cheering? Or maybe it's the last bastion of plurality, given that it's gone to the dogs in every other arena of American life.
Yeah I talked to him a few times taking a walk in his neighborhood. Very friendly. I gave him good natured recruiting advice and he took it well.

Well I am not saying beating fans of other teams is a good thing. I am not a bellicose guys lol. It just surprises me how visiting fans are comfortable expressing their feelings. I expect at least some quarrels but never saw it.
I actually like that though, especially as I will certainly be a visiting fan of the Illini games after graduation.
Oh yeah, they're definitely obnoxious.
@Ignatius Shang I can't say why home fans in the US are tolerant to visitors. I do think it's a good thing though. I've had good and bad experiences as a visiting fan and right or wrong, I project those experiences onto the entire fanbase/school/state. And for that reason, I cringe when I see our fans being inhospitable to visitors. One of my very few bad experiences at a UI home game was during the Groce era after we beat Purdue. I was sitting by a young Purdue fan, maybe 7 or 8 years old. First game he ever saw in person. He was in awe thr entire game. When the final buzzer sounded, a couple adult Illinois fans turned to him and started mocking him causing him to cry. I can only hope that he and his parents understand that those were just a couple of bad apples (oranges?) and as a fanbase, we're better than that.
I told him I thought we needed taller players.
For all the complaining on this board, JG was a good coach. His problem was swinging for the fences on point guards, and not having a plan B.
If Jalen Brunson’s family had been more up front, we would have landed Jawun Evans.
Yada, yada, yada… multiple years of 3rd place BIG finishes and some Sweet 16’s.
Brad is better… no question… but Groce was one or two bridesmaids away from a 12 year run here.
Edit: his real problem was loyalty to assistant coaches who couldn’t land those PG’s. Put Ayo on JG teams, and I promise his coaching looks a lot better.

Yup. He's a great coach in the MAC. And he found a gangly student with no scholarship offers and turned him into the MAC defensive player of the year, a double double averager, and the nations #6 rebounder.
Groce is a good x and o coach. But you are right never got the talent. These mid major teams are capable of pulling off an upset but very few could do well in the grind of a P5 schedule. Not many have the depth necessary
