might led one to believe we shouldn't play Curbelo. But they'd need to understand it's over the course of the season and takes into account the games he was recovering from a serious head injury.

...you get a better picture of Curbelo's value. He forces teams to close in on him and facilitates. A lot of times, he should likely be credited with a hockey assist (if we kept that stat for basketball).

Tonight was bad because our shooters went cold and he felt pressure to create his own shot. That's never been his strong suit; he's not Iso Ayo. That being said, he's still a damn good player and we're a better team with him than without him.

My goodness. The passing score was a hypothetical 67% for this test. The Illini got that 67% and finished right before time expired. The Mocks got a 66%, fortunately. Hopefully their bout against Houston will be less stress inducing.

To continue with that, let us count our other blessing. A #2 seeded Kentucky lost today to St. Peter's who was seeded at #15.

Just got back from the game. Spent 39 minutes wondering why in the world I would drive 8 hours to put myself through absolute misery. (made worse because got stuck with seats by the three most obnoxious Ohio State fans you could imagine cheering like crazy for Chattanooga.)

Then the final minute happened and it made all that worth it and then some.

Just a few observations -

1) The pregame sendoff for the team at the hotel was really cool. Band, cheerleaders, lots of Illini fans high-fiving and fist-bumping the players and coaches as they walked through the crowd to the bus. Not sure if that's something they always do but loved it.

2) Not sure how it sounded on TV but definitely felt like a road game especially later in the second half when the casual fans started getting into the game and pulling for the Mocs.

3) It was interesting watching Underwood and Hawkins interact during some of the late second half and timeouts. Got to go back and read to what all happened there.

4) Nice arena, great atmosphere, even with a game both teams struggled a lot. I like Pittsburgh, fun city to walk around. Illinois really plays hard on defense, for the most part didn't let the offensive problems carry over. Kofi was gassed in second half which is understandable when you see the beating he takes.

5) Survive and advance! We get at least one more chance to watch the Illini this year, which I'm very thankful for.
Thanks - and what was the BU-Hawkins interaction you saw?

I watched the game on Tivo delay and did not notice anything. (Also haven't stayed very close to the comments on this board in the event it's already been covered.)

Here’s the thing: he’s so good that he committed six turnovers and shot 1-for-7 and was still the straw that stirred the drink tonight. I can’t explain how difficult that is to pull off.
On one of those turnovers, a defender pushed Belo in the back, jarring the ball loose.

On another, Coleman turned his head away just as Belo was giving him a routine pass to start the offense (TO should have gone to Hawkins).

I don’t recall the others, but I take those two off the board if I’m grading.

The shooting is what I’d ding him for… He’s flailing his legs on his mid-range jumper, and he missed a fairly easy layup again.

Hope the whole team is sharper on Sunday…

Really ugly win but glad to survive and advance. Offense has been rough for sure. Has anyone else seen enough to Curbelo's turnovers, sloppy passes and contested shots. I get the ability to get touch the paint is important, but six turnovers, 1-6 from the floor and some really ugly possessions are hard to take.

Lost in the shuffle but Grandison only played 9 minutes but had 3 boards, 2 assists, and by eye was in great position on D. I think they really miss his contributions all over the court. As much as I love Hawkins having Grandison at the top of the key to feed Kofi or take a 3 changes the offense. Hawkins is not comfortable yet making either play.

This game was tough to watch from start to finish, but I will take that type of win 100% of the time if it means surviving to play another day.

I hope this second half opens up Plummer's confidence on the offensive end. He seemed to disappear in the IU game, passing on open looks at the end of game. We will need his sharpshooter touch on Sunday.

The Frazier steal and behind the back dribble to spark the transition Plummer three in a nutshell shows the value Frazier provides, even if he wasn't scoring.

On to Sunday!

My bracket still intact as I have the Beloved defeating Zags for Natty. We all want a Natty for UI. We all want best performance every night, that is a tough bar to reach every game. Tonight, was solid D and horrible shooting night. We survived. 1 down 5 to go. After tonight 32 other teams are done, we survived to compete Sunday. Refocus and get the next one.

Something ain't right!

Kofi and CoHawk seem healthy, but:
Trent seems hurt, at least mentally on O. Seems half his body is wrapped in some sort of trainers tape.
Grandison seems 90%, not healthy enough to play his game tho.
Curbello seems sensitive to noise (Covered his ears on inbound play next to ref whistle). And has he hit a legit shot this month?
Demonte has an issue with pulling the trigger. Great D, but not even thinking about shooting.
And I thought we were deep, but our bench seems to be no help at all.

Where am I wrong?

I love Curbelo. He brought energy and broke down the defense when our offense was stagnant. It's really interesting to see the disparity between the raw box score +/- which has him +18 and the advanced stat, BPM, from Torvik that says he was -9.7 and the worst player on the floor. Maybe advanced stats don't know what to do with Curbelo.

it's difficult for me to wrap my head around as well. Kudos to the "visual learner" guy that posted the graphic. Me like purdy pictures. Drives the point home. He'll give us all strokes but you gots to keep the Belo in. If he ever figures out how to cut the turnovers to nothing he's going to GRADE OUT.

Why should I be worried?

Games don't carry over, and I'm not playing in them.

Nothing to worry about from tonight.

Illinois got outrebounded, outshot, didn't foul out any of the opposing bigs, turned the ball over more than the opponent, Kofi got 2 points in the second half (yes, that putback to give Illinois the lead for the first time), and Illinois still won.

This was due to phenomenal defense after the first 4 minutes of each half (Chattanooga scored 20 points in those 8 minutes, 33 points the remaining 32 minutes). Malachi Smith, their leading scorer, got 12 points on 20 shots. Their other starting guard was 2-11. De Souza played 18 total minutes because he couldn't hang with Kofi.
Well said friend!!!

I know Trent and DMW were MIA on the offensive end but there’s also this:

Seth Davis’ favorite players Smith and Jean-Baptiste combined for:
16 pts on 6-31 shooting, 0-7 from three, 2 assists, 4 turnovers

No, a win AIN'T a win. This was pathetic. It's March, and this team has real talent, size and ability that scares everybody else in college basketball. Our team - staff and players -- gotta put it together, now. But you're right in that this win does allow another day.

No we don’t have “talent that scares everybody else.” There are at least a dozen teams more more talented than us.
