I think our collective disappointment will only grow when we see what he becomes from here. As he matures he is going to be amazing. The mistakes will be minimized and the wow-moments will only increase. Wish it was going to be here. For those of you who are glad...you don't know what you got, till its gone.

We will be fine as a team, but Curbelo will not be easy to replace.

I’m a Curbelo believer. I know not all in this forum are. I don’t think this is one of those “test the waters and come back” ala Kofi last year. But “My time here at UIUC has come to an end” seems pretty final.

I think things would have been different if he hadn’t gotten injured. He wouldn’t have rode the bench as much. He wouldn’t have faced as much public scrutiny. But injuries happen, and especially long lasting ones, are tougher than all heck.

I fear this is one of those things where we see him go and flourish on another team, and we are left with a case of the “what-could-have-beens”. Hopefully a school that we don’t play or see a lot. But he is going to be a star PG somewhere else and I guess in the end, good for him.

I’ll miss El mago
Some of my favorite off-the-court moments with this particular group have involved Belo (meeting him after the AZ game on the floor of SFC, my stepkids meeting him in Lincoln at the Nebraska game and getting autographs, watching him interact with fans from floor level before Iowa, etc)...so I'm definitely bummed. But life's a journey until it isn't, so I wish him the best and hope he doesn't transfer to another B1G school.
If it's Miami, I'm OK with that. See him in the tourney next year.

I can't believe how indifferent I am about a transfer this huge. Last year was amazing, and his good moments were so memorable. But after this year it just felt so hard to believe he was going to consistently play to his potential.

No ill will. He will probably do great things wherever he goes. But I have faith in the staff to replace him with players that will be a lot less frustrating.
This is my exact sentiment as well. We've come a long way these last few years to get to the point where there are legitimate reasons to believe a talented transfer or recruit will more than adequately replace a departed player.

Sad to see him go, but wish him nothing but the best. What an awesome and fun talent to watch. He will be great wherever he lands. Just hope he gets right for him as I think this was a tough year for him mentally.

That being said, the staff is doing a great job getting this roster ready for the next steps, or so it seems. Can’t wait for basketball! Is football over yet?

Good Bye GIF

Man, not everyday you lose a pre-season All American, All B1G Freshman team member, and B1G Sixth Man of the Year (as a freshman).

Obviously things didn't work out this year, but we'll always have his absolutely ridiculous highlight film from 2020-2021.

Good luck Belo! Hope to see you in the league one day. One of my all-time favorite Illini.

Love and will miss Belo. So fun to watch and will have so many happy memories of his play as a freshman, his BTT games vs. Iowa and Ohio State - he really is in the middle of some of the best basketball we've seen here in a LONG time. That clip of him jumping into BU's arms at Michigan will be an all-time favorite.

Hope he ends up at Miami as I'm sure we would all enjoy having an ACC team to root for against Duke and Carolina.

Tip of the hat to all the insiders for giving us the heads-up in advance that this news was coming. Made it easier to take today, and I only hope you are as spot on with your predictions of who is on their way to Champaign.

I think this is the best move for him and in the long run the best for the program. I hope he does well elsewhere.
Why is that? I understand if he feels like he needs to get a fresh start elsewhere after a tough year. Maybe that's it. But I genuinely wonder sometimes how something that seemed so promising last year and he and Underwood seemed to be so close (from the outside looking in). What was it? The system hasn't changed. The assistant coaches did but is that such a big deal? What motivates him to go after a difficult year? I'm not judging- just actually curious. And I'm not upset about the decision.

Now appearing in Tampa
Cr*p, well, just like I became a Bulls fan when Ayo was drafted, I guess I will be a lukewarm (fill in the blank) fan for Belo’s next team. I just hope we never have to play them.

Really disappointed for us, but happy and hopeful for Belo.

I guess I need a new avatar

I'm so incredibly bummed out it didn't work out for Belo here. The program will be fine, hopefully Belo will be fine, but as a fan I'll miss the guy. At his best he seemed to me everything we could ask for in a player and person. Thank you for the memories.

Even though we had the hints this was coming, it doesn't make it any easier. Talk about someone that loves the game. He only wanted to perform for his team, his coaches, and his fans. Out of the many memories, the one that will be forever etched in my mind was his freshman year when he came out of the game and tried to give Coach U. a high five that was denied and then he went and jumped into coaches arms. I know Illinois will be fine, but this is a huge loss on so many levels. We have some major work to do losing Belo, Trent, Damonte, Plummer, possibly Grandy, and possibly Kofi. How many minutes and point per game is that? How many years experience and chemistry playing together? I think Kofi might be back, but still that's a ton of guard play gone. Talk about needing Skyy more than ever. Best of luck Belo, really enjoyed watching and cheering for you the past two seasons!

Good luck to BELO
I will always be a fan and root for him as long as he's not wearing a hated BIG rival or Missouri jersey.

Good luck young man....go be great!!!
