Which recruit for the Illini history was the biggest surprise in their success at Illinois?

Looking for players that were not highly regarded coming in but turn into a key player
Not sure if he was highly regarded coming in or not, but Nick Weatherspoon would be candidate

Nick was highly regarded. 3rd team Parade All-America, which puts him in the 11-15 range for the 1969 HS class. Maintained that ranking as the 13th overall pick in the NBA draft (late lottery pick in today's NBA).
Wow.

Just how did Henson get Tony Yates who I figure was part of landing guys like this.

Was pre-Henson and Yates.

Wasn't around then, but understand that Harv Schmidt was considered a hot young coach early on in his tenure, going 19-5 and ranked as high as #4 in the AP poll in the 1968-69 season when recruiting Weatherspoon. Per the DI, Jerry Colangelo even offered him the Phoenix Suns head coaching job in 1970, but they couldn't agree on terms. Suns eventually gave the job to another college coach, Cotton Fitzsimmons of Kansas State. Schmidt went on to have a rocky tenure at Illinois, and was forced out after winning only 5 games in the '73-74 season and having fractured key recruiting relationships.
