#33 (hanging in the rafters) disagrees.

After graduating from Chicago's Westinghouse High School, Johnson, a sharpshooting 6'7" forward/guard, attended the University of Illinois, majoring in history, before being selected by the Kansas City Kings in the 1981 NBA draft. Among Fighting Illini fans he is probably best remembered for his game-winning shot against Michigan State University (MSU). At the time, MSU, which was led by future all-time NBA great Earvin "Magic" Johnson, was undefeated and ranked #1 in the nation, but Illinois was also undefeated at 14–0. The victory gave Illinois a 15–0 record and the #2 ranking nationally (Illinois subsequently faded during regular season play, but MSU went on to become eventual National Champions).

Johnson was elected to the "Illini Men's Basketball All-Century Team" in 2004. Eddie Johnson was selected as a member of the 2019 class of the Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame.

I remember Eddie hitting that shot against MSU from the right corner like it was yesterday. I was in 8th grade and was watching on TV with my Dad. We went nuts when he hit that shot. Too bad they lost to OSU the next game and it was all downhill from there that year for the Illini. I didn't realize....Eddie had a really nice, solid NBA career. Sorry....back to recruiting!

It would seem to me if they did it to avoid the baggage before they would want to avoid it again. Or Jeramiah must be tons better than his brother.
Just because he committed to Mich St. doesn't mean we layed off of him. There's baggage with every recruit these days, no way Underwood would have passed on a commitment from a player like that. Especially knowing how close the brothers are and locking up Jeremy puts you in a better position for his brother.

It seems we're past the point of needing to do that as a program. If 0440 says we backed off, that's likely exactly what happened.

Illinois definitely backed off or said something along the lines we need more time to evaluate. Regardless Coach wasn't ready to accept his commitment and Jeremy was ready to commit somewhere.

Please, every program would do it. It's part of recruiting with the big boys. Look at his top 5. All programs with more success than us the past decade and they had no problem recruiting him and his little brother. If you think Illinois is above that, you are kidding yourself. We aren't in a position to be turning down 5 star point guards ESPECIALLY who have connections to one of the best basketball factories in the country and a little brother who is projected highly. If you people really think that, then I don't want to hear any Jeremiah Fears discussion. Because that means he's not coming here too.

He is better than his brother….dad has his issues but a lot of that came when Jeremy wanted to commit and Illinois backed off.
That didn't hurt their feelings? I guess we will find out.

I know I'm dating myself here, but did he go by EJ? If so, I didn't know that.

The two people I had in mind both did and were high profile misses on the recruiting trail.
Can't remember if he went by EJ in college, but goes by EJ as Suns TV announcer for years in Phoenix area.

Well he isn’t a 5 star point guard. Also look at his offer list and who was really recruiting him hard towards the end. He wasn’t a take for most blue bloods as well as Illinois. He’s a good player but Brad is very mindful of roster construction and how players fit with one another and he wasn’t sure he wanted another 6’1 guard who is a below average shooter and rebounder.

Not a 5 star anymore. But his final 5 was still Kansas, UConn, St, Illini, and Michigan. If Illinois didn't want him to commit, not sure why he named them in his top 3. My issue is, why are people talking about his brother as a possibility if Underwood supposedly didn't want him because of "baggage"? Not like his brother is clearly better than him.

Jeremiah is clearly better than Jeremy.

Is Joliet West a basketball factory? That is where he was attending high school when Illini were recruiting him. He just recently moved to Overtime Elite, so that was not a factor one way or another. Also, I thought at the time when we “pulled back,” it was that he was a shortish guard who didn’t shoot particularly. I also disagree with your premise that Illini aren’t in a position to turn down a 4-star player. If he’s not a good fit, we’re actually in the position that we don’t need to take a top 50 player just because he’s highly rated.
