Is Joliet West a basketball factory? That is where he was attending high school when Illini were recruiting him. He just recently moved to Overtime Elite, so that was not a factor one way or another. Also, I thought at the time when we “pulled back,” it was that he was a shortish guard who didn’t shoot particularly. I also disagree with your premise that Illini aren’t in a position to turn down a 4-star player. If he’s not a good fit, we’re actually in the position that we don’t need to take a top 50 player just because he’s highly rated.
To elaborate on this, I thought it was something that was discussed and agreed upon that stars don't really mean a whole heck of a lot anymore....?

I remember Eddie hitting that shot against MSU from the right corner like it was yesterday. I was in 8th grade and was watching on TV with my Dad. We went nuts when he hit that shot. Too bad they lost to OSU the next game and it was all downhill from there that year for the Illini. I didn't realize....Eddie had a really nice, solid NBA career. Sorry....back to recruiting!
Beat Sparty on a Thursday. Sports Illustrated went to the Saturday game against OSU to put us on the cover (a huge deal at the time), but we lost so the cover was “Big Doings in the Big Ten” with an OSU guy driving to the basket over a couple of Illini defenders.

Not a 5 star anymore. But his final 5 was still Kansas, UConn, St, Illini, and Michigan. If Illinois didn't want him to commit, not sure why he named them in his top 3. My issue is, why are people talking about his brother as a possibility if Underwood supposedly didn't want him because of "baggage"? Not like his brother is clearly better than him.
I just told you Underwood didn’t want him because he is a below average shooter that he didn’t feel we needed with the current roster

Wow.

Just how did Henson get Tony Yates who I figure was part of landing guys like this.
Harv Schmidt landed him along with Nick Connor that year. He had 2 or 3 years in a row of really highly rated classes

And Harv snagged both Spoon and Connor out from under Ohio State's legendary Fred Taylor. Spoon (Canton McKinley HS) played v. Nick (Columbus East HS) in the Ohio HS hoops finals, in '69. That East team was among the greatest in Ohio high school basketball history. Ed Ratleff (Long Beach State; Houston Rockets) and Bo Lamar (Univ of South Louisiana; SD Conquistadores of the ABA, Pacers and Lakers) starred on it and all five starters played in D-1, IIRC. Both Ratleff and Lamar were two-time first-team All-Americans.

That's crazy. Two guys on the same high-school team who were two-time, first-team All-Americans in college.

Both Nicks died very young, alas. I think Spoon was in his late '50s and Connor in his early 50s. RIP. Great Illini both.

Please, every program would do it. It's part of recruiting with the big boys. Look at his top 5. All programs with more success than us the past decade and they had no problem recruiting him and his little brother. If you think Illinois is above that, you are kidding yourself. We aren't in a position to be turning down 5 star point guards ESPECIALLY who have connections to one of the best basketball factories in the country and a little brother who is projected highly. If you people really think that, then I don't want to hear any Jeremiah Fears discussion. Because that means he's not coming here too.
There is so much wrong with everything you have said that it is almost laughable. But if we laughed, then you would think we were laughing with you.

We would not be.

Final destination, Eastern Michigan. At least we think. I'm guessing there's been ongoing negotiations with a pro team from Hungary or thereabouts.
