I think Brian Johnson was last Illini basketball player to get an engineering degree. FYI - he was a walk on and Lucas' younger brother. My understanding was they don't let football and basketball players major in engineering because the lab classes get in the way of afternoon practices.

He prefers a really good engineering school

The Purdue fans are saying yes. I trust our staff. They’ve earned it.
It's also somewhat risk free. If a player really doesn't like his role based on the effort they're willing to put forward or their family isn't a culture fit, the transfer portal taketh and ILLINI NIL has the power to giveth.

I don't think I've been this excited for Illinois basketball since that short period of time in 06 where we thought we'd have the inside track at Rose & IDKWTI.

I was pretty excited for the class of 11. We had solid returners and were adding Leonard, Richmond, and Head. But yes, this is a much different feeling. I am excited about the roster and the fact that we have a coach willing to adapt to make the most of the roster.

The only real small combo guards I think of for comparisons are Monta Ellis and CJ McCollum. How's DGL compare there? Probably better, I'm sure.

Maybe that's a recent policy. I believe former offensive lineman Ryan McDonald earned a bachelor's and master's in aerospace engineering while playing for the Illini in the late 2000's

Nope. Jack Engram majored in electrical engineering and was Academic All-Big Ten.

"That's why I went to Illinois," Ingram said. "I wanted to play basketball, and I wanted to take it as far as it would let me, and then when that time was over I tried to see where I could put my engineering degree to use."

Brad needs a new nickname. His recruiting has raised him to the next level.

As an oldster my memory is not perfect. Jack was a transfer. Varsity athletes time constraints make it hard to study engineering.
In the 50 years I have followed Illini football and basketball - scholarship engineering majors were very rare.

I can blame old age for my imperfect memory. What causes your constant need to insult other posters?

As a former D1 track athlete, I'm aware of the time constraints.

My posting history is right there. Feel free to give me an example of me insulting posters.

There used to be morning chem/physics labs. They had to have them in order to get enough students through the lab. I'd be surprised if they found a way to get rid of them.

I suspect there are other factors.

1) For the courses I took, the homework load for a typical 3hr engineering course was 2-3 times that of a 3hr LAS course (chem/phys labs excepted). This was despite my being far better at engineering. It just took far less time to do the reading/writing than learning the more complex algorithms and then doing the problem sets. There may be LAS courses that require a lot of time. I never found one. [Some of the Music and Fine and Applied Arts courses on the other hand ...]

2) Eng professors may not be as willing to bend the assignment/exam schedules. I know one eng prof who told athletes that they would be allowed one late homework or makeup exam during the semester. All others would be graded as zeros. "Decide if you are primarily a student, or an athlete."

I don't think Ghost's post was a slam and didn't read it as such. Always struck me as an informed and respectful poster. In any event, if you post something that's incorrect on a message board someone will point it out. I know it's happened to me (more times than I care to admit!), as I'm sure it's happened to pretty much every regular poster on here.

I'm sorry you think I'm constantly insulting posters. I'd love for you to give me another example.

We tend to find that the Galloping Ghost is a purrrr-fect example of a non insulting poster.............

BTW , our names are Me and OW.............It really really is .......

I am not sure if the university has a formal policy on what major a player can take but I am sure if a star recruit wants to study engineering and that is what they are basing their college choice on I am sure the coaching staff would make it happen

All college athletes no matter what sport has a huge time commitment
