Illinois Golf 2022-23

What has happened to the women's squad? They've been really bad during the early part of the season.
Wang and Sy are really good. As good as any in women's golf. The team has no depth. Knudson and halamma are bottom tier players who are a little young. Frick has tons of potential but is a true freshman. The team graduated a few good seniors last year.

that was a great team showing and man this squad is loaded. Bogey-bogey finish has AdC miss by a shot on the individual. Dude is a couple of swings away from having won two great tournaments in a row. Get ready folks, he is punching his ticket to the tour. Love that Hunt and Buchanan seem to be the next wave already in waiting. Squad doesn't look to be dropping anytime soon.

What in the world has happened to Jerry Ji? Two years ago it looked like he and ADC were going to be stalwarts. ADC is there, but Ji has pretty much cratered.
Jerry has never been the same since his major shoulder injury last year. He just doesn't hit the ball far enough and in doing so he always has to take out a bigger club than the others in the fairways and middle shots. In doing so he ends up having a harder time controlling the ball when it lands on the greens and getting it to stop. He's still pretty good at par 3s but struggles a lot on par 4s and 5s.

Yep very strong performance. The one thing Mike Small is a bit annoyed at with the team and Adrian and has been trying to improve is how they finish. Adrian could have back to back wins in major loaded fields but he really has struggled to close out on many of his potential wins. Small has been trying to instill a killer instinct in the team.

That is just plain awesome!

btw, how does one interpret the golfstat rankings? Basically, it appears that each team is 1 point lower than the next on a 300 point scale. That feels a bit contrived, frankly, but maybe it isn't. I just don't know

I don't know and this is really a very small sample size. But just like any rankings there are pros and cons. Coaches polls, in which we are 5th also awesome, are inherently biased because it is not stat based. Golfstat attempts to be number based. How accurate that is and the way they go about it is not something I am going to care enough about to research. Golf is almost impossible to gauge accurately because it is so week to week, but we have had two great results against very good comp so far. Not sure about the Dayton Invitational's field, feels like it might be weaker.

Look on the Golfstat website under "coaches corner". There is an lengthy and sometimes tiring explanation of their rankings.

Mens team is off to a disastrous start in Ohio. They should lap this field. Pretty shocking.

They are trailing Cleveland State in the second round. Cleveland State is ranked #248 according to golf stat. 🤔

Wow, that is an understatement. I forgot this started yesterday.

Looks like they'll finish 10 shots behind barring a massive turnaround.

Started this morning. 36 holes today and 18 tomorrow. Almost half way through at this point. They may still win but these guys are too good to be in the middle of this field this far into the tournament.

Ah, that makes more sense. Hopefully they can squeeze a win out, especially with that field.

Easy on the overreactions to the first day. Very cold and tough conditions on a world class course that has been a major venue in the past. tied for the lead heading into the resumption of play.

I hate to say this but if you are expecting each and every match the boys to come out and be their best that just isn't how golf works at any level but particularly when we aren't talking about pros. This team is very talented and deep but not winning this wont be the end of the world or barely have an impact on the standings as long as they don't shoot like +30 today. Goeke who is in the lead is a very good player and has just gotten better his whole career kinda similar to Besard in terms of his senior performance. Wright state is a good team for sure, would beat most Big 10 teams. I still think we should out last this field but in golf, more than other sports, it doesn't always work out that way.

Guilty as charged. However, 27 holes like this at regionals or NCAA’s and it’s likely over. If this event had a field similar to their last two events they would be looking up at a lot of teams.

As far as their depth, it looks like Jerry Ji isn’t going to help so it really just these 5. Hope Jerry turns it around but he’s really struggled.

I'm intrigued by the scores in this Dayton event. Anyone know why Hunt appears not to have played 18, 1 or 2 while basically everyone seems to be done or nearly done for round 2? Even more interesting, Lang doesn't have a score for 7, 12 or 17. Odd to have skipped non-consecutive holes.

They most likely have a scorer with them entering scores after each hole on the app. Probably a tech issue or a scorer not entering the scores correctly.
