I don't have the basketball smarts to say what percentage of blame lies with Brad vs the assistants vs the players. But I'm not sure how the off-season can be blamed on Brad. He (and Chet and TA) went out and got the top-ranked portal players. More than one site said we had done the best in managing the portal.

Now managing post-portal, maybe that is another thing.
Making a living in the portal isn’t necessarily a good thing. You can bring in some players that don’t fit the culture or eventually don’t buy into the system. Even BB said that in the presser after the bowl game. It’s better to recruit highschool kids and build up the team and the culture your trying to implement way. The portal should only be used as a supplement to the current team or roster.

Maybe BU needs to bring in someone from outside the program to give these guys a dose of some reality. Don't know who that might be, or even if such a person exists? Grasping for straws here, but if rumors of internal problems with who is getting what in NIL, etc. are accurate, someone needs to point out to these guys that they are costing themselves way more in the long run than just a few thousand in any NIL differences this year. Immaturity and unprofessionalism at its finest. I know plenty of students who got full rides and scholarships while I was in undergrad but I didn't cry about it and pull D's and F's and not graduate. I don't know, this whole NIL may just be the final nail in the coffin for college sports. Sure doesn't feel like it used to. We are now paying for the last three years of unprecedented conference success we enjoyed. Life as an Illini fan.

So when we lost all of our assistants did the offense go too? This year looks like last year only worse because we lack leadership from Frazier, shooting from plummer, sheer determination and will from Damonte, and a monster in the middle from Kofi. Offense has clearly been degrading since our assistant coaching change.
So do we make a change there? Who runs the X's and O's of the offense? Their system isn't working.
Brad has been successful with his offense(s) everywhere he’s been.
(They’re proven.) It ain’t the offense.
It’s these Hessians that don’t care about team, frankly.

(He’s gotta do better about getting them to execute. Or we’re in real trouble. )

The Spread Offense, is Brad’s offense that he has run off and on at: SFA, OSU, and here… He first got it from Johnny Orr, and Brad put his spin on it. Frank Martin had him put it in at South Carolina when he was an assistant there.

As far as I know, neither Chin nor Antigua have reputations as being real crackerjack X’s and O’s guys. Stephen Gentry, I think is thought of as more of an X’s and O’s guy in various coaching circles…but personally I think Brads stuff is just as good..it’s just different. (The 5-O stuff he does I dunno if that is Brad’s brainchild or derivative of the
5-0 that Huggins used to run…it looks different.)

Gentry’s was behind a lot more quick-hitter stuff…a lot of ball screening with Kofi and Ayo….usually out of a horns-set stuff a lot.

I'm not saying it's good or bad, but it's here. You can't ignore it because your own players will leave too. Like someone mentioned above, this was supposed to be the Miller / Curbelo backcourt. That didn't work out so well either.

A lot of poor choices tonight but Hawkins really killed us with his turnovers. So many empty possessions. I love his heart but he’s playing way outside himself.
Mr. Box Score says Coleman had 3 turnovers, which isn’t horrible for 36 minutes of play. But the ones he had seemed pretty ghastly (if one type of TO can be worse than another). Shannon’s 3 turns were not great, either.

Not to say the refereeing is solely to blame, but I wonder if any team has ever come out on top while footing the bill for a 40-10 free throw discrepancy.

+1 for use of 'Hessians'!

I feel like Coleman had at least 5 bad passes. That box score has to be wrong.

We are too busy doing things like this. Its fun when you are winning but not a good look when u are losing......

The only thing he did right was time when to sit. He did it right as Roper released his free throw shot, and the fans yelling "sit down". It resulted in missed free throw. Honestly, it was his best defensive play of the night.

Maybe this is a team that makes every 3 in practice so BU has geared his offense to the 3. They don't hit them in games, so that should dictate they go inside to Dianja or drive to the basket and get a basket or get fouled. You could play a perfect game but when your opponent shoots 30 more free throws you will lose the game.

There are little tiny shards of good basketball I see from this team that make me hopeful... for next year.

Hawkins is a complete mess. His shot selection is a disaster. He has no clue where his passes are going. He’s making it an extremely complicated game. He looks like he’s crawled so far up inside his own head he can’t find his way out. He might need a couple games on the bench just to straighten himself out.
Same thing happened last year with Hawkins. He’s a bit of a head case.

Had the (un)fortunate pleasure of sitting courtside for that debacle tonight. This is one of the worst offensive teams and schemes I’ve ever seen. There is next to no purpose on almost any pass, cut or screen. So easy to defend. Also just an awful shooting team between forced 3s and missed open 3s. 8/28, 8/28, 7/31, 7/27, 7/23 last 5 games behind the arc. Yikes. Definition of insanity just “running” the same garbage on every possession. When you don’t have Kofi or Ayo to bail you out you see how bad the offense is. Or this year a ridiculous once in a lifetime shooting night by TSJ.

Also, and I’m sure I’ll get torched here, but Brad’s antics on the sideline are getting ridiculous. The screaming at guys, the constant terrible body language…. It’s hard to watch in person so close. I’d be embarrassed if I looked like that in any situation. Get a grip Brad.

End of day this is Underwood’s roster, staff, and program. It’s on him.

My optimism says this is one of those blue blood five star rosters that looks like reheated butt in early January and somehow clicks unexpectedly, goes on a conference run then ignites in the tourney
Don't ask me for references, it's a hope.

Except we don’t have any five stars and we’re not a blue blood.
