Looks like NW and Hoosiers go down tonight. We will be tied for 2nd. Just need to win a few tough games on the road... and stop jacking up so many 3's.

After Northwestern gets done running the gauntlet of 6 games in 13 days the lesson will be...that for the millionth time the rules are different for ScUM and tOSU than for everyone else.
They need to have more conference games before the new year to keep from these brutal stretches

I get that but we had a 5 game stretch in 12 days.

13 days. Assuming you're talking about 1/4 thru 1/16. That seems pretty normal. The kids can't play over Christmas. And I don't want them to be playing too many games while students are on break.

18-22 year old basketball players can handle 5 games in 2 weeks coming off almost a week of rest, IMO.

These kids can play several games over a short period of times with quick turnarounds. Doesn't mean your going to get the same result from the last game as the first game. Even though they may put just as much or more effort into the last game its probably not going to be the same. There legs will be weary and there energy will be down. Its like a rechargeable battery, it charges right back up to full power at first but over time it takes longer and longer to recharge. Unfortunately same thing happens as you get older.

I watched only the first half of Nwest Iowa, I live in Florida and value my sleep, so I missed the part where Iowa took control. Anyone have a concise analysis of the second half?
Has Nwest come back down to earth?

To summarize:
-It was a 4 point game at under 8 timeout (3 if you want to include free throw after timeout)
-After that point, NW struggled to score points, whereas Iowa scored pretty much at will from everywhere (behind arc, free throw line, etc.)

Really a close game until NW got cold down the final stretch.

Back to Earth? It is one game. I have maintained that we will know a lot more about NW's postseason aspirations in the 4 game stretch that began last night (@ Iowa, Mich, @ Wisc, @ Ohio State). I think 2-2 in that stretch is key for NW, otherwise it can spiral pretty quick thereafter. They have a very tough stretch run (but who doesn't in the B1G?). I will withhold judgement on "coming back down to earth" until after their OSU game (one data point is not enough to convince me otherwise). To this point, NW is still a very solid squad. A road loss in Iowa City does not change that...at least yet.

The kids can do it. What matters is the rest that the other team has had in comparison when you play the 5th or 6th game in a short stretch. If the other team is well rested, that will give them an advantage mentally and physically.

This is why it is so rare and to be celebrated when a team goes undefeated in the regular season (or close to it), especially when there is top to bottom talent in the conference. There will always be a few games in the grind of a long season where a team is relatively tired compared to their peer, which can make or break the game.

If Purdue can get to end of regular season with 1-3 losses, that would be the hallmarks of an excellent basketball team (and one that deserves a shot at the top overall seed in tourney).

What is your definition of well rested?

For Illinois, in their 5 games in 13 day stretch, we lost the first game and won the next four. Anecdotal, sure. But Illinois played on December 29th (against Bethune-Cookman) and lost their next game to Northwestern on January 4th. Northwestern lost to Ohio State on January 1st and still beat us on January 4th. They had a tougher opponent and had 3 less days of rest.

These kids aren't playing back-to-backs or 4 games in a week. They're also rarely traveling cross country during conference play (I realize that will change in a couple of years). Every team deals with it.

I guarantee Brad wouldn't use it as an excuse.
