I'm just going to say it. We played freakin well tonight. We were the better team. We had the much better shot quality. Hand it to Iowa- they made high level shots and made the 527 free throws they were gifted. Play that game back 100 times with an actual competent reffing crew and we win 99 of them. This loss won't do anything to us. Im proud of how we came out in this one. Keep playing like this and we won't have many more losses this season.
Best 1st half defense I have seen in my humble opinion

Hawkins had a bad game but so many people on this board are just insufferable with bashing him. He busted his tail out there, took on the toughest defensive assignment, and got an armload of boards even though he was playing poorly.

Calling him lazy and dumb is just vile, and you guys just suck for saying that stuff.

I haven't seen anything out of line here? He absolutely deserves some criticism for his play today. His head needs to match his effort.

He has all the talent and ability he needs, but his head is keeping him from deploying it properly so far. We've seen flashes of brilliance, followed by the most head scratching pass attempts and offensive sequences you can imagine. Today was an example of the latter.

I'm squarely in his corner, but he needs to shut up, knock of the gesticulating, and just play.

TSJ and Cohawk with too many turnovers today. Can't give the ball away on the road.... especially when you put your opponent at the free throw line 30 times.

I guess I have a different take- I thought the Illini played extremely well, maybe their most complete game against a quality opponent. However, I agree that one play destroyed them: drop coverage on the pick and roll. Just like against Indiana no adjustment was made against the one thing causing all the problems.

We played great, game was lost allowing Perkins to score 30. That is flat out unacceptable.

I think a big reason we lost that game was our drop coverage, which we play with Dainja at the 5.

IMO, once we realized Perkins was torching our PnR coverage, we should have taken Dainja out and played Coleman at center and gone to switching PnRs. Perkins just absolutely feasted, got endless jump shots due to the drop coverage.

That action has killed us for the last few years. I think it’s less a choice and more the limitations of Dain and Kofi before him that are the issue. If I was coaching against Illinois and needed a bucket I’d go there every single time.

Thought we were the better team out there, and kinda mad that we don’t get a return game. Just one of those days.

To those who think the refs are the reason that Illini lost the game...

Good teams don't make dumb mistakes. Good teams play with a higher basketball IQ than this team showed at times during this game.
If you dont think that the refs missed crucial calls down the stretch that hurt us then I guess we watched two different games.

I was ok with it. He made an unreal amount of long twos and we played the probabilities and lost. It happens. It wasn’t nearly as bad a strategy as refusing to double TJD or something like that.

Twin-towers Lieb and Perrin may have been a better choice on the free throw lane for that last Illini free throw to try and snag the rebound.
Not lasering it off the front rim would help, too. With 1 second, it has to be a controlled tip, not a diving catch.
