RE: #4 absolutely not in every case, at least for the Illini, from my experience. In my MBA program at DePaul, I (a non-alumni fan) had to literally tell a friend (an Illinois alum) everything about the currently/at-that-time top 20 Illini basketball team as if he had never heard of them, haha.
