That's too bad. Feel for the team, it sucks being right there year to year and not getting over the hump. I don't think it's a curse, I think it's just what 7-to-1 odds looks like.
I've got the odds of going away empty-handed in match play 8 consecutive times at 34%. That's like having an open 3 to tie it on the road at Indiana. Except the worse odds happen when we don't want them to happen.

Yep exactly right. Plus, it feels a little worse drawn out over 12 years and 8 tries, and since it's not just one thing (like a three-point shot) it's easier to rationalize it as a pattern - but IMO it's just luck. We keep making it this far, we'll bring home a title eventually.

Surprised and disappointed to be done, but I have to acknowledge and congratulate the team and coaches for another very good year. Our geography does not say golf school, but our record sure does.
It seems like we were one player short of being a title contender. Hunt and Besard combined to go +27 in stroke play and lost their matches. Puts tremendous pressure on the 3 top golfers. Golf is an incredibly fickle game, but no team can afford 2 out of 5 players having bad weeks.

Besard was very hot and cold. He had 1 fantastic stroke play round. He just couldn't putt when he was cold and that was today. Hunt was very meh in stroke play but played good in match play just got FSUs best guy.

Not sure who to expect on the team next year. If Illinois wants to be very good again I'm not entirely sure who they'll have besides Hunt and Jackson. We need Hunt to have a great leap and Jackson could be a top 5 player next year. Voois should be ready but as a 4/5 not a 3 I don't think. God if only Jerry Ji never got hurt.

I hear you, but they were both playing higher ranked players in Match Play - we had the advantage in three of the matches and FSU had the advantage in two of them - it boiled down to Buchannon has to win his match. He was playing an unranked freshman and Buchannon just finished tied for 2nd in stroke play and was playing well. It's match play and anybody can win a round against anyone, but that's what it boiled down to

Great season and successful for all - certainly not the ending anyone wanted. Coach Small deserves a national title and I think he will get one, you just have to keep getting in the arena
